Branscombe v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 07 Jul 2017 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 4 Wickets

Match report Having only had 8 players on Wednesday, Ben managed to pull together a full 11 thanks to Rob Scott of Broadclyst, Tom Frost, and Branscombe’s twelfth man, who happens to play for Devon under 11s.Several Erratics arrived at Branscombe early to take advantage of its scenic beauty. Skipper Mark Hailwood was seen entering the sea in search of inspiration. It didn’t help him with the toss, which was lost, and we were invited to bat. Pre-toss inspection of the pitch had suggested it would be sporting, and so it turned out.

Frazer took the first ball, and qualified for the Primary Club by slapping a rising delivery straight to cover, where it was promptly caught. A golden duck? Not according to Wikipedia, which says that “An opening batsman who is dismissed on the first ball of a team’s innings is said to be out for a diamond duck, platinum duck or royal duck, depending upon the regional usage.” So, take your pick.

Your correspondent faced the second ball of the match, and succeded only in providing a new definition of playing it by ear. Cue a fair amount of blood, and much subsequent discussion on the desirability of wearing a helmet. Thereafter the innings struggled slightly, with two run outs, and 9 scores in single figures. Only Jonathan Kirby and Rob Scott reached double figures, with some positive strokes. The final over produced a second blow to the head, a ball of decent length rearing and hitting Mark Hailwood with some force on the grill of his helmet. Without it, Mark would have been in serious trouble. So, a total of 80 for 9, which, given the pitch might have been enough.

Sadly the Branscombe batsmen knew how to play their own pitch. Both openers were retired at 25, and at one stage it looked as though we would struggle to take a wicket. There was though a dramatic finale, with both Chaves and Mark H taking a wicket, and Frazer completing a spectacular run out. The most remarkable over was bowled by Tom Bennet -Hughes. Tom took a wicket with his first ball, leading sources close to the wicket keeper to query the skipper’s judgement in not bringing him on earlier. Several lusty blows and another wicket left Tom with figures of 1-0-14-2.

Despite our late rally, Branscombe were deserved winners, and proved fine hosts with free food in the village hall after the game.
