Stokeinteignhead v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 20 Apr 2019 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 63 runs

Match report Annie Chave

I’m not sure that we’ve ever had a warmer first game of the season, we certainly haven’t had one that includes 3 young debutants…. not since I’ve been around, and I’ve been around for a while now. Stokeinteignhead looked beautiful in the hazy sun, the wicket spongy, but nothing like as damp as you’d expect in April although the outfield was…..long (apparently the mower had broken before the final cut).

Mark H won the toss and opted to bat first choosing to open with Chave & Chave. It was hard going, as anything played along the ground didn’t make the boundary unless it was clubbed. Fraser managed a four before holing out to a catch at square leg. The older Chave batted his way through to an excellent 57 where he felt every ball of it (absolutely everything hurt). George Greaves joined him for a lusty 26 and Chris Cook did what Chris Cook does and managed a rather elegant 61. Of course the outfield had dried out by the time he came in!! Our three debutants didn’t really trouble the scorer (me) but they looked the part. Phil & Mark saved a rather reluctant John Curtis from having to go out to the middle and we made 187, which considering we were thinking 120 would be a good score, was very satisfactory. THE OLD MEN DID GOOD.

We opened with a very decent spell from Ben and Mark helped with the extremely sharp fielding from Alex to run out Izzy who had opened with Hugh. Kudos to Mickey for agreeing to take the wicket keeping gloves having only done it once before, 3 byes & 1 leg bye was not a bad return. The Erratics aren’t known for sledging but if we were partial to it, then there was definitely no need as Stokeinteignhead were pretty good at doing it to themselves, with Thornton-Clarke shouting, ‘I’m getting really annoyed with this now Hugh, it was my call’ as he made a slightly suicidal run & there were some comical umpiring changes & boundary abuse. First bowling change was the steady Phil Power and debutant, Mike who bowled a bit of swing very well for someone who hadn’t played for 12 years (I bet he’s hurting today)! His figures 2-13 off 4 overs thanks in part to a brilliant catch from George Greaves, who seemed to be in every fielding position taking an impressive 3 catches. Alex Jopling bowled an extremely impressive five overs of turning leg breaks (3-9) and John Curtis and George Greaves bowled economically as did Fraser and Chris Cook for their 3 overs. In fact we bowled 10 bowlers, including Mickey, who desperate to have a bowl gave the gloves to the decrepit Duncan and managed the final wicket on his first ball, not a bad strike rate, in fact the best ever if he never bowls again. SCC’s 10 men managed to get to 124 thanks to Thornton-Clarke, who top scored with 34, but our bowling attack was rather extensive and our runs rather too many. We always enjoy our games at Stokeinteignhead, they’re a great fun side to play and boy is their pub good.
