Erratics v Old Grammarians, Lustleigh, Saturday 20th July 2019, the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Phased by the signals on the pitch the skipper elected to ignore the flat dry strip, intriguingly marked "Sat" (?Saturn or ?satellite, but either way clearly a coded subliminal reference in celebration of the lunar landing 50 years prior) in favour of one marked ‘Fri’; a powdery pitch with dusty craters that had more in common with the surface of the moon than a calendar cricket wicket.

OG’s batted first and lost their first wicket on 24; Siva taking a smart low slip catch, a reward for Connor Johnson-Goodyear’s quick and accurate bowling (8 overs 2 maidens 1 for 13) Siva later estimated that the ball had been travelling at 1 million times the speed of light, give or take, though no astrophysicists were on hand to confirm or deny this.

Sean Webb bowled with great control (11-1-2-51), getting good turn from the dusty wicket, and bowled out the pick of the Grammarians’ batsmen as both neared their 50s and looked to be on cruise control. The OG’s momentum briefly stilled at 110 for 3.

Fraser, bowling into the crater end with verve and venom, was the pick of the Erratics bowlers, ripping out the middle order (8-2-3-26). Fraser should have bowled more had the burden of captaincy not inclined him to spare his own talent in favour of others getting a game.

OGs declared at tea on 184 for 7 from 41 overs.

Erratics in reply lost quick wickets around the sea of tranquility that is Martin Wright and were struggling at 33 for 1 after 5 overs.

With a long tail, Fraser despatched Dominic Prosser into alien territory at 5, with momentous motivational words:

Gain control now batsman Dom,
Take your aspirin pills and put your helmet on.

So began what was to be a Specific Oddity - an aborted erraticollapse.

With Martin falling for 20 in the 13th over, Fraser joined Dom with the score at 71 for 4; the match tilted firmly towards the Old Grammarians’ axis.

Thereafter the stars took on a different look.

Fraser, leaving the captain’s capsule, shared a stand of 114 that delivered Erratics a comfortable 6 wicket win; his stylish 36 not out (35 balls: one 6; five 4s) a counterpoise to Dom’s bombastic, brutish 81 not out (51 balls: six 6s, nine 4s) which repeatedly saw him attempt, unsuccessfully, to launch the ball into orbit.

Should you ever get called up and find yourself floating in a tin can far above the world, you’d want Fraser as your captain; the calm unassuming engineer of the victory and the motm.
