Match report There is nothing we like more than discussing the weather and there were many a conversation going on prior to this match with rain forecast but not with high probability. There was a split between the optimists (“probably just a passing shower”) and the pessimists (“we have no chance of seeing this one through”). Anyway with a sense of cricket duty the captains (Mark Hailwood for the Erratics) discussed a toss and “came to an arrangement”. Clyst would bat. Their team had a slightly younger average age than the Erratics but probably only around 40 years in it.

And so the 35 over match began with the Erratics well on top....after the first few balls. A mean Connor Johnson Goodier over and a couple of tight balls from Mark Hailwood left Clyst well behind a par score at just 4-0 with 1.2 overs already gone. And then the first passing shower arrived. And then a few others. Off we went. The optimists and pessimists got going again and oh so briefly the optimists seized control. Out we went again in a brief interlude with the game reduced to 25 overs a side. Clyst now even further behind par launched a desperate counter attack and Donovan hit an impressive six to complete our skipper’s over. 11-0 off 2. Connor went for two of the first ball of his second over ( you don’t usually get such detailed reports!) when the heavens opened once more. Off we went again. Clyst 13-0 - showing brightly in the gloom on the home team’s flash new electronic scoreboard.

Chris Ferro had produced a sumptuous tea and envious eyes kept looking towards the bulging table. A further agreement was made - we would take tea and then assess the situation. There was much talk about Duckworth Lewis and Super Overs. But the mother of all downpours then put paid to any thought of further cricket and only left the opportunity of a larger tea than usual.
