Ashburton v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 08 Jul 2021 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 5 Wickets
Match report
As the “St Thomas Team Bus” departed Okehampton Street, an evening’s cricket in the sun seemed an unrealistic proposition as we drove through drizzle under heavy grey clouds on the way to our mid-week T20 fixture at Ashburton. Yet the team bus talk was more focussed on the result of England’s Semi-final victory in the football European championships the night before (let’s leave it with that happier memory, rather than the Final!). On arrival, Ashburton appeared to have their own summer microclimate, tucked away on the south east edge of Dartmoor, when we arrived in full evening sun across the ground.
The Erratics, captained my Mark Hailwood, won the toss and elected to bat. However, the uncovered pitch would expose that it’s not always sunny in Ashburton as it had clearly been a victim of the downpours after a couple of early short-pitched deliveries struggled to get above knee height. The Erratics batting line-up struggled to adjust to the low-bouncing conditions with wickets falling with reasonable regularity preventing any momentum from developing. The youthful Ashburton side were tidy in the field and took their chances including a diving one-handed catch at square-leg to dismiss opener Siva Subramanian. Only Jonathan Beverley (21) supported by Jonathan Kirby (9) gave much resistance, though only the former managed to outscore Extras (20), leaving Ashburton requiring just 75 for victory.
A couple of early Ben Youngman wickets, including dismissing the opener with a tricky off-cutter, reduced Ashburton to 16-2 and gave the Erratics a glimmer of hope. But Ashburton played the conditions more proficiently and middle-order partnerships meant that the result was never really in any doubt, despite a sound catch at mid-wicket by Matt Crawford off the bowling of Mike Sullivan, as Ashburton reached the total in the 15th over. The most memorable moment of the match came from a ball from Mike which was destined to be called wide on the off side. Rather than leave the ball, the Ashburton batsman opted for an elaborate switch-hit and sent the ball down towards the boundary by the pavilion at third man, to cheers from his teammates and supporters. Still somewhat basking in the acclaim, the batsman had missed that the ball had stopped short of the rope and a quick and accurate throw from Siva and neat glove work from Jonathan completed the tight run out. A minor victory in an otherwise disappointing game. The batting line up have two upcoming T20s to make amends and give the bowlers something to work with!
