Match report
Jon Beverley reports...
The journey of the St Thomas contingent of the Erratics team, consisting of Matt Crawford, Richard Lindsay and Jonathan Beverley, to this evening game at Whimple got off to an inauspicious start when chauffeur Matt realised that he couldn’t remember where he had parked his car. However, after wandering the streets of St Thomas for several minutes we located the car and were on our way and made it to the ground on time, despite a close encounter with a runaway hay bale.
As for the match itself, it’s safe to say that it will not live long in the memory of most of those who were present, so much so that I’ve forgotten most of what happened at the time of writing this report almost four weeks later. The Erratics batted first on a skiddy pitch, and, with the exception of Duncan Chave, made hard work of it, with no one apart from Duncan able to time the ball. He swiftly reached the retirement score of 25, but aside from this only Rick Lindsay and Harry Everett were able to make it to double figures, as we limped to 87/8 from 20 overs.
Given such a meagre target, the Medics were able to play largely risk-free and the result was never really in doubt. The Erratics bowlers (Youngman, Rutherford, Fraser Chave, Emdad and Mustafi) stuck to their task well though, and took the game to the penultimate over but only managed to take two wickets, one for Emdad and the other, I assume, a run out.
An observant reader may have noticed the use of the word “most” rather than “all” at the start of the second paragraph of this report. The reason for this is that there is one person who stands a better chance at remembering it than most: Steph, recently arrived from Canada, for whom this was the first experience of watching a cricket match. Such was Steph’s enthusiasm for learning the ways and laws of the game that she went for a mid-innings net session with Ben Youngman, and even took a turn at operating the electronic scoreboard. Amazingly, despite the dour cricket on display, she wasn’t put off and returned with her entire family for the President’s Day match a couple of weeks later (in which her husband, Travis, played for the Martin Weiler XI). I’m sure they will be an excellent addition to the Erratics.
A.N.Other was Mustavi Emdad.
