Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Isis on Sat 17 Jul 2021 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 69 Runs

Match report A.N.Other was Hugo Longrigg from Stokeinteignhead

Matt Crawford reports.

The sun was back, and the Erratics were back! After 3 consecutive weekend games were lost to cancellations, finally we could get a longer format game underway. Not only had the sun reappeared in the sky, it had also been turned up a bit, and whoever turned it up a bit had also swept all the clouds away. It was very hot.

The opposition today was to be Isis, touring form Oxford, in a 35 over contest. Bolstered by a couple of Stokeinteignhead friends, the Erratics won/lost the toss and Tom Bennet-Hughes alongside Martin Wright started us off with the bat. Tom was out very unluckily, trying to kick the ball away from his stumps as it rolled backwards from a defensive shot, but either foot or ball removed the bails sent him on his way. Martin was out rather less unluckily, running himself out to prove that he is still capable, having not yet managed the feat this season.

Enter Hugo, of SinTH. The next 10 balls were kept out carefully, but the following 54 were full of fireworks. 9 sixes and a bunch of fours, as well as several lost balls, Hugo took us shaking at 0-2 up to 132-3 as he retired having scored almost 80% of the runs at that point, the 20th over. Jonathon Kirby and Duncan Chave were Hugo's main companions, adding partnerships of 51 and 66.

Captain Fraser's blushes were saved by his Father, worried that our ringer would be scoring all the runs. Duncan blasted 3 sixes of his own, including the longest, dispatched into the tennis courts over long on, and reached his first 50 at Tedburn St Mary's.

Tea taken, the Thames travellers to try to topple the trying total of two-oh-two.

Isis got off to a good start, reaching 40 from the first 7 overs and keeping up with the run-rate. That is until Ben Youngman took the first wicket, which caused a mini cascade of wickets at the other end, with Matt Crawford claiming 2 more wickets in both his 5th and 6th overs, Roger Putnam taking 2 identical catches at cover in consecutive balls.

After some typically miserly bowling from Captain Fraser, a couple of patient partnerships were constructed by the batsmen to try to resuscitate the Isis innings having fallen to 46-5, but the tourists had already dropped well below the required rate. Roger, Tom and Siva took a wicket a-piece, the last of which was the man coming in at first drop, who today was also the last "drop". Walter battled for 75 minutes for his 30 runs, before Penny Price snaffled a good catch which rocketed to her at mid-off. The final 9 overs were seen out defensively before the game came to a close, the Erratics victorious by 69 runs.

Cold beverages all round for those who traversed to the King's Arms, well-earned after a very enjoyable day in the field under a hot sun.
A lesson learned. Don't forget your cap.
