Cheriton Fitzpaine v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 23 Jun 2022 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 9 Runs
Match report
The weather was typically “English” only missing the rain. I was treated with some important information on beautiful cycling paths around Exeter courtesy of his royal highness Ben Yarde Bueller. “Do the toss and choose to bat if you win”, the skipper exclaimed after arriving 10 minutes late. Fortunately, the opposition weren’t as punctual either and Fraser did win the toss and did choose to bat first. I was particularly excited for this game after all hopes of having a game at Lynton and then at Morebath were shattered into pieces on my first ever North Devon tour. Nigel and Richard took to the crease to start our innings. And just all typical things in Devon, the first ball pitched halfway and decided to not bounce more than a few inches as it made its way towards Richard’s pads who carefully put his bat in the way and avoided being a victim of uneven bounce first ball. Richard has been in red-hot form this season and his array of front-foot drives and pull shots were on display yet again and helped himself to a 30 ball 29 with 2 sweetly struck sixes and a boundary. Nigel became the first victim of the pitch as he was dismissed for 8 runs trying to play a straight shot with the ball not bothering to bounce, hitting the middle stump.
Fraser took some notes off Siva from the Chumleigh game, setting two people up at number 3 based on who got out. Nigel’s dismissal saw BYB take the crease. A brief partnership saw the Erratics go over the 50-run mark around the 10th over before BYB himself missed a straight one and lost his off stump. Siva, playing his last game for the Erratics for the foreseeable future (at least until the Oxford tour) took to the wicket and decided to not wear a helmet. There was much speculation about Siva returning to the Erratics as an overseas Irish pro which I am sure, all of us hope will come true. He punched the ball confidently to point for no run and on the very next ball, fell victim to a ball that stayed a tiny bit lower than the usual. This saw Jonathan Kirby, fresh of a retirement from the last T20 game at Morebath for a well-made 31, come to the wicket. Jonathan was dismissed for 5 and Mr. President came to the wicket with Nigel’s bat. It was really interesting to watch our president bat as he was either 2 yards behind the wicket and stretching heavily to reach an off-stump pitched delivery or 2 yards outside to play the ball close to his body and sneak a few quick singles. He eventually missed a ball and got stumped that brought Matt on. Matt made his intentions and the skipper’s intentions very clear from the first ball as he started off his innings with a 4. The skipper himself, came to the pitch with a singular thing in mind and slammed 3 magnificently hit sixes and took the total of our innings to a 129.
Cheriton-Fitzpaine started their innings slow with Ben knocking their opener over on his very first delivery. The other opener, R Hilton got going but fell to a runout with an excellent throw from Crawford. Tim Fawcett and Fraser Chave took wickets on either side of a spell from Siva. It all looked done and dusted until Cheriton’s number 6 and 7 took to the wicket. Carter and Wreford punished anything short and kept the scoreboard ticking getting closer and closer to the target but were ultimately unsuccessful and the game ended in a victory for the visitors continuing Fraser’s run of wins as a captain. All in all, it couldn’t have been a more Erratic-esqe farewell for Siva. We hope to see him return and action soon and wish him the very best for his time in Derry-London-Derry (Yep, I heard a lot about how to correctly name the place).
