It maybe that the sun has got to me or the Bazball roadshow has got into the zeitgeist of rural friendly cricket but this was cracking game of cricket. To quote an old chestnut , cricket was certainly the winner. That it came down to the last ball makes for the perfect denouement. And along the way there was good cricket played by both sides.

If you look at the scorecard you will see that a certain L.Grant features a great deal. In all departments of the game he excelled - he was a 3 in 1 cartoon hero - Swing,Catch and Biff. But this was not a one man show.

Our opponents - a touring team hailing from hipster Shoreditch (the name comes from a bar the team members frequent) - batted first. Lee and Nigel opened the bowling on what turned out to be a pitch with some bounce. As a wicket keeper I complain constantly about the low bounce of Devon wickets - so I can’t complain about the bounce on the Harberton track - at times Nigel was coming through at shoulder height and he and Lee soon put paid to the openers. Lee - channeling Trent Boult - was angling into the right-handers stumps constantly.

The Strongroom innings was built around the partnership between Davey and Chandna. The former a self assured 16 year old right hand bat. The latter a left hander with a flashing blade. Each of our bowlers in turn posed challenges for this pair - Rithvik against the left hander using his round the wicket angle to get him fishing inside the line on several occasions. We were given a player Vinay by our generous opponents - who bowled well controlled cutters. Sean and Fraser varied their flight beautifully. Sean eventually got Chandna out, driving too early at a fullish ball (this dismissal was one that the Erratics should have learned from but didn’t as it transpired when it came to our turn to bat) caught by the eponymous erratic called ‘Catch’ - who went on to get a hat trick of the aforementioned. All our bowlers deserved a reward and apart from Vinay they got on to the scorecard. With a fast outfield we felt we had not let their batters dominate and felt we were in the game at tea.

Thanks must be given to the guests who hosted our tea - with an exceptional spread. ( I had to curtail my appetite when I learned that instead of going in at my usual slot at 6 I was offered the chance to go in at 4!) Again our innings leant heavily on two superb knocks - both left handers. Fraser played himself in and after his Dad lofted a drive he grew in confidence - I was surprised to hear it was his first fifty of the season as he looked in control of his game. Ben and I scored a few boundaries to the short downwind side but both perished driving uppishly on a pitch that had pace but did stop in the wicket ( We cricketers know what we mean but from an outsiders point of view this sounds like a kind of recreational animism!)

By the time Martin came out the precocious teenager came on to bowl at quite a lick - having left Martin flexing but not making contact - when he got down the other end he relaxed and deposited an edge to the keeper. This brought Biff to the wicket and Fraser surprised most of us by getting out after passing 50. Lee/Biff picked up the L handed cudgels from here on. Over by over the fielders spread - some of them half way to Dartmoor - making boundaries a tough ask - and yet the total we were chasing came in view such was Biffs clean striking with some help from Vinay and Nigel. They both lost their wickets and we were counting T20 style the runs per ball count. It looked doable as though our cartoon hero had saved his best till last. Last ball and 4 needed and Biff missed and a bathetic leg bye was run. Even cartoon heroes are human after all - thank goodness.

There is a feeling of exhilaration in cricket at the elite level where limits are being rewritten. A little bit of this has spread to the west country - long may it flourish!
