Match report Andrew Forrester reports...

......13 days late(r).... Some of you may know that I play music with a band called the Procrastinators - it took us so long to come with a name for ourselves that Procrastinators seemed the best fit..so I mention that before starting the match report which you have all been waiting for hopefully not with bated breath....

Marldon - for those unfamiliar with it - is a sleepy commuter village back of Torquay and Paignton. A ground the size of the proverbial postage stamp. On this occasion the weather was balmy. But.. this idyll was broken on repeated occasions not by derring do on the field of play (Yes I will come on to the cricket...) but by aeronautic displays from the airshow next door. WW2 planes circled over head and the afternoon climaxed with a patriotic themed display by the Red Arrows.

As well as a game of cricket, there was a game of lose the ball/find the ball. I think the two sides were evenly matched in this contest - next time we could bring stop watches to verify this.
Another statistical quirk - and this is slightly cricket related - is the amount of time yours truly was not socially distanced from Mr Mitchell - the opener whose century was the heart warming story
of the game. I umpired at square leg for about 20 overs beside him and then he batted through the innings with me keeping a few feet from him (Again I must dig out that stopwatch for such
occasions in the future)

THE GAME!

We batted first .They batted second. They scored 2 more runs than we.They won. In these days of slow news - since the inception of live streaming and texts - what to put into a
match report? Once I was out early on Phil and Fraser batted with insouciance - boundaries coming thick and not so fast cos of the time to find the ball. It was surprise when they were out
as batting was comfortable (Phil had teased the fielders a couple of times early on by skying to a point just behind non strikers end). Martin when he came in scoring more than a run a ball
continued in his merry way. To be honest I have been on holiday since the match and I can’t recall the manner of the dismissals but they were all totally undeserved I am sure. Jonathan too
contributed steadily and Anuj had another Anuj cameo of 15 off 6 balls .

Was 204 a good score? Well as the saying goes , you can’t tell until both sides have batted (Oh sorry that’s for test cricket...)

Oscar began at pace, Mark at guile. For a bowler of Oscars pace there is little room for error with such short boundaries. Mark though bowled through his allowance with great control and
deserved at least a wicket. Singh succumbed to an Oscar delivery and Simcox’s wicket fell shortly after to Fraser (a great slip catch by Chave senior). At this point, it felt even Stevens .

However the game inexorably got away from us as Mitchell started to add offside scoring shots in addition to his muscular pulls. He was supported by a couple of youngsters and it was hard to know where a
wicket was coming from. Chave senior - who was no longer needed in the slips - shook off the years swooped in the covers and ran young Milton out. Maybe we were through to the tail?
No in comes another youngster who knew how to hold a bat and with ease he and Mitchell chased the total down with nearly 12 overs to spare.

The fairytale element mentioned by Mark in a post on the day was that for Mitchell who scored the winning runs to bring up his century, this was his 25th century and his first since his dad had
died. A reminder that there is more to cricket than cricket.
