The benches of Tipton St John Cricket Ground:

I had my first opportunity to play at Tipton’s wonderful ground, situated not far from the River Otter, on this July summer’s day. Upon arrival at Tipton CC one is greeted by a fabulous array of benches outside the club house from which to admire the pitch drying out in the beating sun after a Devon summer deluge ten minutes earlier.

The extent of the boundary on the far side approaches perilously close to a well used footpath. I became intimately familiar with this footpath from our time in the field and this allowed me to admire even more of Tipton’s benches up close. These are spaced all along the far boundary, about 5-10 meters apart and range from older charming wooden benches, to the more modern plasti-rubberfaux-wood sort. I am, however, unsure how much use these seats get during matches, being directly in the line of fire for most of the Tipton innings! Brave spectators required: get as close to the action as you dare. These benches, aside from providing the weary walkers a short rest until they were forced to take evasive action from a well played sweep, were very useful for quickly positioning a fielder too! “On the boundary, left of the tree, in line with the bench.” or “First bench for this batter, second for the other”... I’m sure each bench has a rich and fascinating history, perhaps someday they will each one be devotedly researched and chronicled and that would make for far more interesting reading than I can conjure up for this report.

Oh, yes! We played some cricket too...

40 overs were “negotiated”, we lost the toss and Tipton decided to put us in to field first. We didn’t field badly, though we were left ruing one or two missed chances, much like England in their first Ashes Test. A few nice catches (Tiwari, a brace; Chave (F)) and a beautiful ball from JK to take the bails off for the second wicket. Ultimately, with 3 (Three! ) retirements (60+ each) and another 60 odd made between three of the middle order bats, things looked very bad indeed after a sweltering session in the field. 289 off 40 for 8 wickets. In case anyone still had high hopes and boundless energy, we were reliably informed at the break by Fraser that this was the second highest total against Erratics, since records began.

Tea was an excellent affair. We regained some spirit and approached our session in the middle with renewed – not hope exactly – but cheer, at least. A note on Tipton’s cream teas: they matched their cricket for quality and this
writer hopes to see them incorporated into many future teas, home and away (though made the correct Devonshire way, of course!).

Our innings got off to a good start with some well placed boundaries from Rich but things quickly started falling apart amid the scoreboard pressure to hit big. Notable innings from Fraser, (58 off 74, with 10 4’s! once he started
“Going for it”). Anuj likewise started his innings brightly but was cut short by a seriously excellent low catch at mid-wicket. Things looked like they might be steady for a while with the Chaves at the crease, having given up on Frazball and using the opportunity to practise batting technique. However, after Duncan’s wicket fell, the slow and steady collapse continued. Props to Paul and John for seeing it through to the end, despite everyone wishing for a cold pint already.

Erratics claimed the moral draw, much preferable to the reality of what was a thumping defeat, after a challenging hot and humid summer’s afternoon of cricket. Possibly just a slight lack of firepower on our side.
