Match report Harry Everett reports on a routine afternoon win on the floodplain in the Teign Valley, Bridford away, amidst multiple forlorn BBC sport checks on a rather wet Old Trafford.

Not from his choice, but Anuj started with a 7-2 offside field, first ball a head high full toss missed….Second ball edged between MW and DC in 1st and 2nd slip, both leaving it for one another. Fraseball also saw a fine leg and a leg gully, where our Canadian import Jon Beverley missed a hard, low catching chance later in the same ridiculously eventful & comedic opening over. Mr Wright then danced the tango around the ball at deep extra cover (perhaps trying to tease them into a third), they only ran 2. Anuj proceeded to bowl short allowing pull shots through the vacant leg side, Fraseball of course not allowed to change said fielding plan though. He did find his rhythm eventually though, taking 3 fine wickets-two clean bowled, a quality run out from short fine leg and a screaming catch off his own bowling…ask Matt about the dolly Anuj then dropped off his bowling though…

Umpiring line of the match: “Right arm over, six to come, one at a time.” 😂 I’ve still never seen a bowler attempt to bowl with two balls simultaneously in a match!

Friday evening Sandford had their end of season all stars and dynamos presentations, now Sandford to Bridford ain’t that close but I suppose closer than Canadian Colorado to this Dartmoor outpost…Earlier we saw blue pads worn with whites in a red ball game, but not even blue pads, just the clads over the top of white pads..this young upstart couldn’t be bothered to take off to uphold the traditional white of red ball cricket! Trainers, then a full blue Sandford Smurf outfit…kids of today! 🙈

Bev (though less Bevs than Matt’s Topsham 10) got 1 with a serious curveball. “Well bowled” said their outgoing bat to Fraser after attempting to pull a full ball on off stump!

M Crawford mercilessly caught and bowled their southpaw spruce. Then gave the most polite, quiet appeal. 101 wickets for MC in a Unicorn/Slazenger shirt. 👏🏻but he’ll be first to admit this wasn’t one of his greatest spells-the Topsham ale still talking as his bucket hat dropped further across his eyes with each boundary hit for! Centurion from last Sunday, Lee bowled a wicket maiden to finish it-their right handed Stokes-attempter choosing not to pull the short balls Lee gave him, instead shouldering one with his left arm tattoo sleeve, Lee pitched up, innings over.

159 all out in 27 overs.

Rich Lindsay chased a wide one first over, caught at slip. Wright and Everett were bemused by their opener appealing almost on early-Anuj-levels, one leaving a brown mud mark on my top above my box, yet still he appealed for lbw! I managed to benefit from a few ‘cadeauxs’ as Mr Wright put them, favouring the pull/sweep to full tosses & long hops to reach 89 before top edging one of these off a short ball from late entrant to the attack-Exeter School lad, I out in the last over before drinks. We were well past halfway to their total in the 20th over so Erratic spirits were high. I hadn’t noticed until my penultimate ball I had been batting with a gurt crack down the back of my bat….some excuse for getting out…more frustrating to know my teammates all could tell of the break by the sound, long before I realised!

The same guy also cleaned up Jon Bev soon after & had ton-man Lee playing and missing early on.
Jon Bev and I had put on 72, using MC’s old bat-which I had noticed sounded a lot better than mine, never mind eh…they also gave us 15 byes which some could’ve been wides, harsh on the young wicketkeeper.

Bridford contributing to an easy win with some terrible fielding-oddly many from their youngsters just missing or leaving the ball more than the more elderly who were understandably getting frustrated at the youth of today not putting the effort in that they all did 30-50 years ago and still do now! Two of said youngsters bowled well at the death to make Forrester & Grant slow to the finish line, but still managed to reach 160 well before the Old Trafford rain made it south (my WhatsApp to BBC suggesting Bridford as an alternative location for D5 never made the live feed :( ).

All retired to the Bridford Inn plenty early enough for me to learn that Fraser was opting to pay to go and watch on a big screen plastic females that I thought lads spent their youth snapping legs off like Action Man…Oh I do get educated on such bizarre topics by you wonderful people.

Glad to be back for my first full game of the season after April’s 6 rained-offs and my weird Jim #2 not-so-super-sub role last week.
