Erratics Cricket Club Won by 63 Runs
Match report
The Erratics Summer Test
(Set by Jonathan Kirby)
“An assessment of the value of an opening partnership should be based in part on the final score achieved by an Erratics batting side. An initial slow, steady, wicketless 15 overs creates a platform on which later batters can build.”
In no more than 150 words, present an argument for OR against this assertion. (15 marks)
The Erratics are in the field, you are captain, and are given the following advice from one of your team: “When a bowler starts ripping through the opposition, taking 4 wickets, 2 of which are with unplayable balls, you should end this bowler’s spell immediately.” Your fielder adds “this wouldn’t be the first time that Fraser got a five-for anyway.”
In no more than 100 words, give your decision, with an explanation. (10 marks)
With reference to Lee Grant’s jaw-dropping 129* at Broadclyst, Anuj Tiwari’s match-winning onslaught at Clyst Hydon, and Matt Crawford’s controlled but belligerent 54* today against Ottery St Mary, write a proposal to the Erratics Committee for a new “Honorary Gilbert Jessop Award” for ‘giving the ball a good thump’. Add other references as you see fit.
100 words max. (5 marks)
40 overs per side is a challenging format. Take the situation in which the Erratics bat first and score a decent number of runs. Then, after 15 overs it becomes obvious that the side batting second has no way to win and is denied (by the format) the challenge of batting for a draw. As Erratics captain, do you:
(a) keep going, presenting the remaining opposition batters with the excitement of facing our best bowlers and aiming to finish the game quickly or:
(b) prolong the agony with 25 overs of jeopardy-free cricket by giving your non-regular bowlers the chance to have a go, while rewarding the opposition’s lower-order with some batting practice, and giving everyone some more time in the sun, in a glorious setting?
Give your answer in no more than 250 words, beginning with the words: “Damned whatever you decide” (15 marks)
At Teign Valley on Sunday 13th August, the fielders of one side were constantly alert, walking in as the bowler ran up, fleet of foot when chasing the ball, vocally supportive of each other (in an entirely appropriate way), and repeatedly demonstrating fast, accurate throws to wicket-keeper or bowler (showcasing a direct hit from distance). When batting, they were poised, correct, and stylish in their play, with the quality of the sound of ball on bat indicating great technique and timing. They were also youthful. Does this describe the (a) The Erratics, or (b) Ottery St Mary? (2 marks)
This game saw the return of Bob Cope to what had been his home ground for some 15 years. In games against the Erratics, he dismissed me more times than I care to remember, and I wasn’t looking forward to facing him. “Bob’s giving absolutely nothing away” commented Lee, who was LBW. Happily, although he was giving absolutely nothing away, Matt took it from him anyway, and Bob was removed from the bowling attack just before I headed out to bat.
Was it great to see Bob? Yes or No. (3 marks).
(The correct answer is Yes, but either answer is correct for Lee.)
Please submit your answers by email to the Body Erratic. Be aware that due to a marking boycott by academic staff, you may not get an immediate reply.
You can alternatively submit your answers over a pint, glass of wine, or glass of water, after an upcoming game of cricket somewhere.
