Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Dunsford on Sun 24 Sep 2023 at 13.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 5 Wickets
Match report
Erratics CC hosted (very, very) near neighbours - virtually cuckoos – Dunsford, at Inner-Marsh (In-A-Marsh) field, on a useable Autumnal day. At stake were bragging rights for the season between the two clubs. After driving up the track to the ground, one wit said he thought he was driving up the Teign riverbed, so big were the puddles, which is a testament to the groundsmen (groundspeople?) Chave & Chave and their hard work in getting the game on.
After the ritual of both sides moving the boundary rope – something that will now be in Erratic folklore for years to come – the two Captains assumedly tossed up, the outcome known by only a few and they will take the decision to their graves – yes I forgot to ask – but as we were bowling first on a pitch that had going of soft to very soft, its safe to assume our leader Mr Hailwood won the toss. Opening bowler Lee Grant produced a snorter of a in-swinging yorker first up, which the hired help, Chatterjee, did well to keep out but his opening partner, alas succumbed to Grant’s skills. At the other (treehouse?) end, Oscar Cammack used all his height to get the ball bouncing on a pudding of a pitch. Chatterjee (21), who was looking useful, skied one and D Chave dived full-length and caught the ball in two fingers. The new batsman managed to shovel a Cammack delivery into the on-side, where F Chave collected the ball, twisted while still horizontal and threw the stumps down from 40 yards. That run-out and the earlier slip catch, by Chave n Son were as good as anything you will see in the sub-continent next week! Grant, bowling his fifth over, fell foul of the umpire calling a no-ball for height, much to his annoyance. One chatty player suggested he had an extra ball to get another wicket, this he duly did with his last ball, (again a little high, don’t tell Lee) the batsman, G Perry, who was using his feet and everything(!) managed to hit a leading edge to backward square leg, again a chatty fielder suggested someone should call for the ball. Young Oscar ran full pelt, wind in his ears and eyes only for the ball, firstly, got to see it snaffled by M Wright and then collided into said fielder and ended up flat out on the ground. Grant finished an excellent spell with 2-17 and was notably supported by a particularly vocal supporter. Anuj and the Captain came on first-change and tightened the screw, Anuj, 1-11, took a sharp C&B and bowled miserly. Hailwood made good use of the surface, recording figures 5-14-3 with Chave & Chave each taking a catch. With the score below a hundred and the Captain, looking for something for his batters to chase, gave the ball to Putman and Weiler. They duly obliged and yielded some runs, Weiler really using the pitch, and once Putman, 2-18, put his back in to it and finished the innings, the last wicket was S Perry who scored a dogged 32, Dunsford were all out for 119. Time for tea.
One Dunsford player remarked “Who are the Home side?” whilst looking at the tea spread, and again a chatty player asked, “Well who provided tea?” Enough said. Tea, as aways at Cricket grounds, was a varied affair, from sushi to pate sandwiches and plenty to eat. Thanks to Annie for setting & washing up.
Opening for the Erratics were D Chave (13) and M Wright (15), who both made solid starts before being caught. Martin was initially dropped by mid-off, who fortuitously parried it to cover and was subsequently caught at the second attempt. Fortunately for Wright, there’s one more weekend of the season for him to record a personal milestone, i.e don’t get a duck! With Krups departing for 12 off a pie, after hitting a massive six the ball before, the oppo were sounding confident but F Chave (24) pushed the scoring rate on and then Grant (29*) and Tiawari (18*) secured the win for Erratics, each trying to finish the game T20 style with a six. Which Anuj duly achieved.
Both sides enjoying their end of season run out after some atrocious weather recently.
