Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 30 Apr 2025 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Not a Match Report.
No narrative arc. No structure. Just some random stuff:
You apparently said there was a lot of bickering among the Erratics pre-game?
“No, no. No, no, no…” (without missing a beat) “I said ‘bi-chrring’. It’s an Iranian word.
It means ‘comradeship and love.’”
“We lost because we kept finding the fielders. We were hitting the ball alright,
but more often than not it was straight to a boundary fielder.”
“We lost because we were bemused, bewildered and ultimately battered and broken
by the brilliantly brutal belligerence of their batting. Once they got started.”
On attempting (and failing) to take a catch with the left forearm, while wearing sunglasses,
and later snaffling one comfortably with both hands having removed said face-furniture:
“It seems that varifocal sunglasses don’t help with catching.”
“We lost because we didn’t bowl enough wides. they bowled more wides than us, so we
had fewer balls to hit to the boundary. They also bowled more unhittable legside deliveries
than we did. Our bad balls got hit for 6.” The first part of this, at least, turns out to be true:
Sunsets bowled 11 wides, which gave us 22 runs – wides were not re-bowled in this game.
In contrast, the Erratics bowled only 1 wide.
Whether any of this actually made any difference to the outcome is open to question.
On top edges: “It’s not fair.”
A Sunset batter top-edged a delivery from Tim Fawcett, high and handsome, all the way
to the safe hands of Chris Ferro, on the long-leg boundary.
Another Sunset batter top-edged consecutive deliveries from Matt Hewson, high and
handsome, all the way to just over the safe hands of Chris Ferro, on the long-leg boundary.
Undoubtedly not fair.
What would the Erratics’ captain do differently, if the game could happen again?
“Not accept the appointment.”
“For our entire innings, the Sunsets had 3 fielders behind square.
But I didn’t want to call it.”
“We lost because we had to bowl into the sun, starting shortly after the of the Sunsets’ innings began.
So, wasn’t it ironic that one of their batters requested a cap because the low sun was being reflected
off the windows of County Hall, behind the bowler’s arm?”
“Hey, Mr Selector, where are those pasties? You said that the Sunsets would be providing pasties!”
I did, indeed, because that’s what I’d been told. But apparently the pasties simply weren’t delivered.
We’ve been promised double servings next time. Make yourself available NOW!
The above comments may or may not be accurately attributable to the following Erratics, who were
present for all or part of the game, which was a lot of fun, played in the warmth of the evening sun,
and in great spirit all round, as we might expect from these two teams:
Ridouan Asselman, Annie Chave, Duncan Chave, Fraser Chave, Tim Fawcett, Chris Ferro, Matt Hewson,
Jonathan Kirby, Richard Lindsay, Jon Perkin, Anuj Tiwari, Martin Weiler, Ben Youngman.
And from a certain Sunsets Legend:
"Sorry about the pasties, but we did have a delivery from the Gurkha Kitchen of Pakoras and onion bhajis, which some of your guys enjoyed. We didnt know they were coming , so we could not stop those early leavers leaving and who missed out. Sorry!!!. This was a nice surprise and a bonus for those who were still here."
