Lympstone v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 22 May 2025 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won
Match report
Today’s match against Lympstone coincided with day one of the England v Zimbabwe test match (a four-day test - Annie doubtless approves). The mighty unicorns took the field first, and the first 10 overs had echoes of Zimbabwe’s time in the field.
As well as the obvious similarities between Anuj Tiwari and Zimbabwe’s 6ft 8 opening bowler Blessing Muzarabani, we were similarly wicketless, with all of Lympstone’s top 3 retiring at 30.
But Tennyson would have been proud - our bowlers strived, and did not yield. They bowled with discipline, and no one was susceptible to being taken truly downtown. The run-rate eased, even if our only wicket in overs 1-19 was Ben Youngman cleaning up their number 4 for a first-ball duck …because cricket can be like that.
It should also be said that we were fielding with 10. Though John Perkin made it feel like 10.5. To paraphrase Bane: YOU FIELD LIKE A YOUNGER MAN. JK’s glovework also worthy of note in preventing things from getting too extra. Lee’s ripper of a catch off his own bowling in the final over meant that at the halfway point Lympstone posted a respectable 149 for 2.
Fighting fire with fire may be platitudinous, but how else to describe openers Lee & Richard? Our powerplay (for the number of fielders outside the ring was, curiously, restricted to 2) was every bit as blistering as theirs. Much like 160 years ago, General Grant went to war and then retired. A retirement for Matt Crawford also, having provided crucial anchoring through the middle overs.
The Erratics never let the required rate get away from them, and a nail-biter was maturating nicely. Runs came, wickets fell.
At the start of the final over it was 11 runs to win. Anuj and Dhruba occupied the crease. Continuing a mutually agreed upon methodology from the Met Office game last week, they duly ran 2 for every shot struck. Were there always 2 there? With the pressure on the fielders this bold approach created, the answer seemed to be "yes".
Last ball. 2 to win. As the sun beat down on Winslade Park, our skipper Anuj departed from the aforementioned strategy and smoked a boundary to mid-on. What a Thursday.
The captains deserve plaudits for facilitating such a game, as do Lympstone for being such lovely opponents to a man. All agreeing at the pub afterwards on another platitude – cricket was the winner.
