Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 18 May 2025 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 106 Runs
Match report
This match was a veritable run fest by both sides, but especially by Erratics, and played throughout in beautiful sunshine. The toss was won by Erratics, skipper Jonathan Kirby wisely choosing to bat first rather than fielding in the hottest part of the day.
Erratics opening "partnership" of 227 must be one of the highest ever, but not one to go into the official statistics. It is shown in inverted commas because this spectacular partnership was actually created by 4 batsmen, 3 of whom had to retire having reached the agreed total of 50. This meant that our score had reached 227 before our first wicket fell. The four opening batsmen, Harry Everett (10 boundaries), Anuj Tiwari (9 boundaries), Oscar Cammack (7 boundaries) and Dhruba Goswami (7 boundaries) all treated the spectators to a swashbuckling display, until Oscar, who almost reached his retirement status, was found to be LBW at 44.
After this, things settled down quite a bit. The negligible contribution made by Mark Phillips should be recorded here. After a long hibernation, this was his first outing with the bat this season. And he decided not to use it! First ball he waved it vaguely as the ball was snapped up by the wicketkeeper, took two steps out of his crease, acknowledged the entirely justified stumping and headed back to the "pavilion". Here he was able to resume his more useful rĂ´le as scorer, relieving the somewhat reluctant and approximate person who had briefly deputised for him. Lee Grant and Tim Fawcett put in some rapid scoring before Erratics reached 282 for 4 at 40 overs. Extras, at 48, were almost the 4th retiree!
So, things looked well set for bowling at Newton Poppleford. However, they got off to an equally strong start and there were thoughts that the fielding was going to have to be of the best to prevent them maintaining their initial run rate, one which would have enabled them to reach the target, had it been sustained. An early glimmer of hope for Erratics was the wicket of Matt Raistrick, that well known powerful hitter of the ball, but this time out for 4, bowled by Oscar in his second over. Even after that, though, it took many more overs before the run rate slowed down. Louis Adey, retiring at 53, and Rich Coombs, 45 not out, provided a great partnership. As the batting began to be tamed a little, victory looked in sight, especially thanks to Oscar Cammack's bowling. He took 5 for 29. There were also economical bowling spells by lee Grant, Harry Everett and Anuj Tiwari.
The final flourish was the return of Louis Adey to the crease, looking all set for another haul of boundaries and a long last wicket stand. But, after adding only another 5 to the score, his strongly lofted drive to extra cover was brilliantly caught by Oscar whilst running along and just inside the boundary. A triumphant end to their innings and, one could say, confirming Oscar as Man of the Match for his all round batting, bowling and fielding performances.
