Please forgive me if this match report is less accurate than I might usually write. Unfortunately, I am experiencing a recent exacerbation of short term memory loss originally caused by a severe concussion from a new cricket ball striking my temple region 19 years ago at Newton St. Cyres CC. I was unfortunate to be hit by a straight drive played by my opening bat partner of Halberton & Sampford Peverell CC who was a very powerful hitter. I backed up a fair distance and had virtually no time to avoid being hit. I had considered wearing a helmet and decided against doing so, a decision I have regretted ever since.

This was my first visit to Chulmleigh, a Saxon hilltop market town of some 1,000 people. The Met Office had predicted an 80% + chance of rain from 4 pm, but the rain gods were kind and we played all afternoon without interruptions. The wicket surface looked slightly damp, uneven and fairly green. Fraser Chave won the toss and elected to bat with Duncan Chave and Andrew Forrester opening the innings and understandably playing the first few overs with caution on a very low bouncing slow wicket. The run rate picked up when a few full tosses were dispatched to the square leg boundary. Andrew was bowled by O. Brown for a very patiently made 14 runs. Duncan felt he had slightly lost his concentration when holing out to square leg on 25 after he appeared on good form. Both Jon Perkin and later Martin Wright sensibly played themselves in on the tricky wicket before both made very useful innings with a good number boundaries. One six for Martin and two consecutive sixes for Jon who initially showed little mercy towards the promising leg spin of the14 years old Harry Elson, before generously allowing Harry to bowl him for 41. Hugh Sheridan came in to join Martin and I was fairly soon out Lbw sweeping too soon on this sluggish pitch.

Martin went on to make a very well made 40 before he was stumped, coming down the wicket to P. Gordon in an effort to eliminate the unpredictable bounce. Lee Grant promised some fireworks with a six on his second ball, but the slow pitch led to his being caught at extra cover for 8. After 11 overs the run rate was only 4, but by Martin’s departure when the 6th wicket fell at 150 the rate had nearly reached 5 per over. Roger Putman and Harry Everett’s partnership seemed to elicit a sudden bout of rumbustious behaviour in the watching Erratics. This was largely instigated by our own Annie Chave combining diligent scoring with leading boisterous chants for every boundary scored. Roger played a cheeky reverse sweep for 4 which only encouraged Harry to join battle producing the same shot soon after. “Anything you can do ……” Wonderful entertainment.

Roger was run out when taking a bold second run and Harry suffered an Lbw decision too. Dhruba Goswami and Phil Power brought the innings to a gentle conclusion in the 35th over. The score on the scoreboard to beat was 172 but I made the total in the scorebook 174. We enjoyed an excellent tea with several large, beautifully decorated home made cakes. Thank you to Chulmleigh CC for their generous hospitality.

After tea the weather remained dry and Chulmleigh started their innings in a similarly careful vein to the Erratics. Phil Power ( 7-1-23-2 ) and Roger Putman opened the bowling with Phil claiming the wicket of Campling when Lee Grant took a good catch in the fifth over. S. Elston came in and along with the remaining opener, Bushnell started to score more freely. However, Roger became increasingly difficult to defend against and proceeded to take 3 wickets in his final 3 overs finishing with a wicket maiden and figures of 7-2-28-3. Roger had dismissed S. Elston (ct Fraser 16) Parlar (ct Lee 4) and Bushnell (Lbw 26) in short order. The score was 55 for 4 after 14 overs. Dhruba Goswami was our third bowler, achieving prodigious amounts of off spin that alarmed the right handed batters occasionally, but also enabled them to fetch a few to leg when balls strayed towards leg stump. Dhruba was unlucky not to claim a wicket ( 6-1-31-0 ). Harry Everett was the fourth bowler, starting with four miserly overs for 4 runs including two maidens.

Lee Grant bowled a short accurate spell ( 4-1-15-0 ) and was very unlucky to not find the outside edge of the bat with balls moving away off the pitch on a number of occasions. It was good to see him bowling so well after his ankle injury earlier this season. Fraser Chave removed the 5th and 6th batters in his first two overs, the first ct by Harry Everett after poor Harry had dropped two very difficult high chances earlier and the second a reliable c&b. Fraser then had to contend with J. Evans who meant business and scored 29 off 16 deliveries with 3 sixes, before Fraser had the final say by bowling him. (6-0-51-3 ). Phil Power came back on to mop up the seventh wicket which gave him the very laudable figures of 7-1-23-2.

By the time the 5th wicket had fallen at 76 after 24 overs the run rate required to win had risen to 9 per over. Chulmleigh duly increased their scoring and reached 125 for 6 after 30 overs leaving themselves 48 runs to win off the last 5 overs. At 138 for 8 after 32 overs there was a small chance of a Chulmleigh win, but barely a glimmer on reaching 155 for 8 after 34 overs. Harry Everett ( 4.4-2-5-2 ) returned to bowl the last over and cleaned up the final two wickets, bowling H. Elston (11) and dismissing M. Brown st, Andrew Forrester (0). Chulmleigh scored 156 all out so giving Erratics a fine win by 16 (or maybe18?) runs!

Both teams repaired to “The Old Court House” pub where we enjoyed a friendly welcome and some well earned refreshment.

Thanks to everyone for your great company on the last game of my 2025 season.
