It was an ominous start to the day. Weather forecasts threatened that a blanket of rain may finally arrive to bring an end to the seemingly inexhaustible 2026 dry season. Then came Martin Wright's text informing us that he couldn't make it due to a nasty back spasm. Fortunately, for the Erratics, the rain held off and Roger Putnam found us a replacement (Rejeesh) from Stokeinteignhead. And so we arrived at a beautiful South Brent ground on a sunny, though blustery day, greeted by Andrew Forrester's beautiful dog, Tessie, who provided some gentle throwing practice during games of fetch on the outfield.

Pre-match discussions left it a little unclear as to what a good score on the deck might be, with some reports that the pitch often produced low scores, but with both South Brent and Dartington having posted 200+ in their match the day before. Skipper Phil Power decided it was best to find out for ourselves and so put us into bat, claiming that 200 would be a good target. Following a slight delay to remove some dog excrement (not Tessie's) from the practice wicket, our innings got underway with Duncan Chave and Andrew, visiting from Brighton, leading the charge.

It proved to be a difficult track to score quickly on, with the opening bowlers keeping the ball in decent areas, and the dry outfield not as quick as might be expected with a number of shots falling agonisingly close to the boundary. Nevertheless. the openers batted well with Andrew surviving a near lbw before going on to make a solid 20. Following an assured innings, Duncan retired at 50, which I think he might have secretly been quite happy to do, after later saying that he has damaged his achilles tendon. Suggestions that he might want to rest it were met with a confirmation that he was only playing 4 or 5 games on the Mystics tour.

Andrew's and Duncan's departures brought Jonathan Kirby (JK) and Rejeesh to the crease, who both wasted no time, dispatching their first and second balls, respectively, to the boundary. After a solid start, JK was beaten by one that bounced sharply, which he could only edge to short leg. On returning to the changing rooms, he stated that he had the ball all the way up until he didn't. Rejeesh met a similar fate with a similarly sharply bouncing ball shortly thereafter.

There followed a peppering of boundaries from Lee Grant and Ben Yarde-Buller, both taking advantage of the spacious outfield by taking the aerial route, the former retiring on 52 with only the limited over count seemingly preventing the latter from doing the same. Following Lee's retirement, Martin Weiler joined Ben at the crease, who rounded out a solid Erratics innings, reaching 20 with some fine strokes and characteristic confident running. Overall, Erratics smashed through Phil's target by a single run, setting South Brent a score of 202 to win. Between innings, we were fortified (or perhaps even over fortified) by a first class tea, complete with some of the thickest slices of ham I have ever laid eyes on. Thanks go out to South Brent for their hospitality!

Similarly fortified, South Brent came out for their turn at bat. I don't think even the Ambrosia of the Gods could have prepared them for what followed as Nigel Rutherford sent down 5 overs of testing line and length bowling in which he did not concede a single run, bagging two wickets in the process. Before bowling, Nigel said that he could probably manage a couple of overs. In the end, he was having so much fun that he asked Phil for a few more.

Though not quite able to keep up with Nigel's efforts, I held down the other end, taking one wicket for my troubles. Not content with his five maidens, Nigel also effected a run out with a direct hit from the deep to dismiss the other opening batter. Nigel and I were replaced by the Stokeinteignhead men (Roger and Rejeesh), who both bowled some lovely overs, finding bounce and movement. The two collectively bowled three of the opposition batters, ultimately leaving the home side 7 wickets down for only 42 runs.

This brought on Chris Roud and Archie Bowden to steady the ship, who did so well, finding the boundary consistently to significantly boost the scoring rate, before Roud retired upon reaching his 50. Bowden's innings was brought to an end by some fine fielding by Lee, who pounced on the ball and rifled it to Andrew leading to a run out following a somewhat risky call, that I'm not convinced Bowden was completely happy with.

Lee was then brought on to bowl, with JK desperate to be a close fielder, chasing his own target of taking 200 Erratics catches. It proved to be a great decision as the second ball of Lee's over popped up the ball in JK's direction, whereupon he took a fantastic catch at full diving stretch to move him onto 199 catches, leaving Fraser "in the dust" on a mere 196. JK was sadly unable to reach his 200 milestone as the innings was brought to a close three balls later as batter Sibley chipped the ball straight back to Lee, who swallowed up the ball to cement a 58 run victory for the Erratics.

Both sides summarily headed to The Avon Inn for the customary post-match pints. The Avon proved to be a great juxtaposition, with the interior resembling a traditional village pub (though with some choice decor) and the outside preparing for a Sunday rave involving a DJ booth in a repurposed shipping container. Annie seemed keen for a boogie, but was unable to convince anyone else as Duncan and Phil suggested that the music should be more in keeping with a 3/4 "Oom pah" signature, rather than the modern repetitive drone. Thus, upon finding the pub's "bullshit corner" already occupied, and noticing the "no riff raff" signs, we opted to return to Exeter to close a wonderful weekend of cricket.
