Erratics & friends (including Sam Cutler and T Scholes, kindly loaned from the opposition; and one of Erratics’ regular Stoke loanees, Lishoy George) set out for our late season evening T20 game at Clyst Hydon. We also welcomed back Simon Willmot to the Erratics, following a 12 year gap (although this was nothing compared to Matthew McDonald’s 34 year gap before his return this season!).

Erratics bowled first, with Lishoy opening the bowling with some rapid deliveries. I consider Clyst Hydon to have one of the best batting pitches that we play on (not that I have scored many runs here!). However, the hot dry summer has meant that the Devon pitches are becoming uncharacteristically hard. But this hasn’t made batting simple because they have also become bumpy and the hosepipe ban that took place in Devon this summer has prevented the rollers from making the pitches the batting paradises that I dream of! As a result, Lishoy’s bowling clearly upset the opener Neil “Cobra” Collins (who you may also remember from Cheriton), when a ball that was slightly short of a length leapt up at the unhelmeted batsman. Collins’ complaint was presumably triggered by defence of his new expensive teeth, but we know Lishoy had not intended malice in this delivery, so we were able to diffuse the angry response. Perhaps a helmet next time? Nevertheless, Collins is a surprisingly effective batsman. Despite not always displaying a textbook technique, he seem to regularly score a fair number of quick runs against us.

The other opening batsman was Andy Hurry, director of cricket at Somerset CCC, who made a reasonable start before Lee G was pleased to strike, getting him out caught behind as he gloved an attempted pull shot. Simon Willmot also picked up a wicket on his return, while Nigel picked up a couple of characteristic wickets - bowling batsman with surprisingly quick, inswinging deliveries from a two-pace run up – causing the zing bails to flash brightly in the dimming evening light.

The platform for the Erratics’ run chase was very much provided by the non-Erratics, with Cutler and Scholes making the most of their knowledge of the bowlers and home conditions to race along to their retirement scores (cheers guys!). This platform was anchored by Will Luscombe - who achieved his top score of 27, before being run out when chasing late-innings runs – and Lishoy George (16), whose approach was to blast the ball back to Exeter, but didn’t always connect. Erratics needed 25 from the last 4 overs for victory. Matthew McDonald struck a boundary (best way to score runs when carrying thigh strains, the outcome of not having played cricket for 34 years!), before being dismissed by a father-son combination, as Sam Gleave took a smart catch in the covers from his Dad’s (Rob) bowling.

The tension rose as the match went into the final over with Erratics still requiring 8 with Kyle Wedgwood and Simon Willmot at the crease. Some tight bowling and quick running between the wickets meant that three runs were taken from the first three balls. Clyst Hydon felt somewhat comfortable knowing that a run-a-ball wouldn’t be enough, but Kyle had other thoughts as he launched a huge straight six over the bowler’s head to secure the win. So that’s a hat-trick and hitting the winning runs in the final over for Kyle within the space of a week! Another fine comeback-of-sorts after returning from his ACL injury, and a game well skippered by Lee.
