Match report Erratics v Bridford cricket match report

So, in some ways, the Erratics are going through another transition. A subtle one, but a change all the same. Inevitable and necessary like the changes in the vocabulary and use of the English language, and it’s great to be a part of it. Peter Thompson came to watch and in his own special way take part in the game, and I don’t mean just by his umpiring contribution. He always makes insightful observations on the game. He remembers each ball, stroke of the bat and movement in the field. I love it when he’s there as he is such a crucial link between so many generations of Erratics, not least his own family.

The signs were there in the opening over when Duncan Chave ran two and placed a ball to the boundary for four more. Although he then settled on a more watchful role as Erratics batsmen came and went. His innings of 55 with six fours, was wonderfully controlled and brilliantly paced and was a winning contribution to a modest final total that Bridford could not get near to.

It was one of those days....sunshine, blue sky, a gentle breeze, a buttercup filled ring around the outfield, with a reassuring line of trees along by the nearby river and extensive views of green Devon hills. The ground was a wonderful large elegant oval, cut to perfection and the wicket flat and inviting for both bowlers and batsmen. However, it proved to be deceptive. Maybe because of its close proximity to the river, the wicket was soft when tapped with the bat, and the ball stayed low and contributed to the downfall of several of our best batsmen.
It was also a day of debuts. Mark Hailwood was captaining the side for the first time, almost beside himself with worry. Not about the game tactics or field placings, but because he was going to have to lead us onto the field in his underpants, having mislaid his cricket trousers. He’d actually sent out a distressed email. Luckily for Mark, his team and the spectators he located them in time. The other debut was from Alex Louch, who showed great promise as a newly bloodied Erratic, contributing with excellent work in the field including a very good catch off Lucky to dismiss the dangerous Dunk.

Our batting continued with Mark Phillips opening with Duncan Chave, falling LBW to a very good ball from Hole in only the second over. This brought in Krupakar who was determined to score some runs with his lovely new bat. This he duly did with an elegant cover drive for four and several more too for a good contribution in partnership with Duncan but departed LBW from the hand of Bayliss who then also bowled Lucky in his next over, with Bandhu trying to move the score along. Wickets continued to be taken without a significant rise in the total until Rutherford unfurled his Flintoff sized bat. Carefully and responsibly to start with just dealing in ones, then inevitably,
bang, a six. Not long afterwards he was not so careful and was stumped off Thurful. But adding another very useful innings of 12. After Hailwood (with trousers) Willmot and Fraser Chave adding a final 15 between them we finished the overs and were ready for tea.
I’m always amazed that in village cricket, tea miraculously arrives on the edge of a field far from nowhere. Pots of tea, sandwiches and cakes are conjured up for 22+ people. This was no exception and the makeshift, striped marquee/long shed like structure, like something transported from the field of Lost Vagueness at Glastonbury was a great example, along with the scoreboard mounted on old pram wheels, of the delicious eccentricities and improvisations to be found at grounds throughout Devon.

The opposition thought they could slow us down with their good tea ploy, but we bounded out onto the field relishing the space and good weather. Mark Hailwood set an attacking field and brought on two of his top, accurate sharp shooters to open the bowling. To finish their overs with figures of 11-2 with one maiden off six for Rutherford and 4-2 with five maidens off eight for Lucky Bandhu showed the difficulties facing the Bridford batsmen.
Sure enough the scoring was very slow to start with and after 10 overs only 13 runs were scored for the loss of 2 wickets. Whereas the Erratics were 33 at the same stage. Sharp fielding from Mark Phillips prevented several certain fours and efficient work with the gloves from Kirby including a smart caught behind off Rutherford kept the pressure on.
Inevitably a couple of beefy batsmen come out swinging and this is what happened to Simon Willmot. He went for a few but also bowled a maiden, kept his nerve and got rid of both the danger men, Dillon and Bayliss, with a lovely caught and bowled and then a wicket to prove he is another great addition to the Erratics bowling line up in only his second game for us.
That after 20 overs Bridford had nearly scored the same amount as us (57), showed that their batsmen were not done yet and we needed the guile and expert bowling of Fraser Chave to dismiss another danger man, Tucker, who was scoring well, caught by his Dad, Duncan. This was followed by a run out of another good hitter, Lockwood when he was on 16. That left Duncan Chave to collect his second wicket and the skipper to come on and dismiss the big man, Thurful, caught behind by Krupaker who took over the gloves after the drinks break. A good win by 34 runs for the Erratics gave a very satisfying end to a fine day’s cricket. After a walk through the field of buttercups to our cars, with a last look round at the cricket field and green hills, it was off to the Bridford Arms for a cool pint and bonhomie.
