Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 24 May 2015 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 35 runs

Match report On way to Newton Poppleford it was overcast and we were expecting eight Erractics. Captained by Forrester for the day, we arrived to find that we were nine players, then eight, nine, ten, strangely eleven at one point, but the count converged on ten, including loanee Scott Newberry of three-wicket Stokeinteignhead fame.

We fielded first and Oughton and Youngman's bowling restricted Newton Poppleford's openers to few runs at first, but they soon got their batting rhythm. Overcast had soon turned to Devon drizzle, which made for tricky conditions for the ever-alert keeper Forester, and induced the (hopefully infrequent) ball-drying rigmarole. Kripakaran and Hailwood took over bowling duties, removing an opener each, with number four falling to Hailwood soon after. Past 20 overs and it was spin time: Haynes, Jack Katene and Scott Newberry taking to bowl. Batsmen three and five, however, put on a healthy partnership, taking Newton Poppleford to one hundred, with many fours and sixes along the way. Eventually removed by Newberry and Ferro on 30 and 73, respectively, Newton Poppleford were approaching 200. A wicket went to Youngman, but Hailwood had clearly taken his wholewheat biscuits (no plugs here), reaching the fifer landmark for the second Erratic time for a mere 18 runs.

Newton Poppleford's ninth and final wicket fell with 194 on the board. At tea we fuelled on a selection some welcome hot pizza and pasties and contemplated how and whether 195 was achievable with the ever-changing pitch conditions. Anyway, it was time to bat.

Openers Kripakaran and Forrester soon picked up runs including some quick running between the stumps. Unfortunately Kripakaran couldn't quite avoid what was a close run-out and Forrester went lbw. Newton Poppleford's three and four bowlers, who gave few opportunities to readily score, took the wickets of Hailwood, Jack Katene and Oughton, batting at three, five and six. Ferro, batting at four, soldiered on, passing fifty for the second time in two days, supported by Will Katene at seven. Passing one hundred we needed roughly six an over to win, and at 150 were in with a chance. Unfortunately, Will's wicket went, and on 93 Ferro, with his well-distributed wagon wheel, was caught at mid-off just short of the boundary. At the wicket Haynes and Youngman, needed 36 off four overs, but it wasn't to be, with Haynes left alone at the crease.

A slightly damp start turned into a great game, made rather enjoyable by a seemingly unreachable score being tantalisingly within reach for a large portion of the game, boosted by Hailwood's fifer, Ferro's not-so-nervous 93 and a great loanee, Scott Newberry. Both teams were greeted at The Cannon Inn by more food, where we caught breath and talked cricket. While we couldn't reach consensus on how best to make oneself alert as a batter when awaiting the ball, we could on it having been a great weekend's cricketing fixtures for the Erratics.

Ben Youngman.
