Match report
Tedburntober: Round One
by Jeff Haynes
Since the Erratics’ exceptionally unerratic mid-season run of seven wins in a row, our performances have reverted to the erratic formula. So, after two good wins last weekend one might have predicted that we would be found wanting in the first of the two October matches at Tedburn St Mary, and so we were.
All was quiet when I arrived, admittedly early for the 1.30 start. My thoughts went back to my last visit to this ground, which was last season … an occasion when none of my team deigned to join me … so it was something of a relief to see Ben Youngman and Danny Williamson pull into the car park. The sky to the east was eerily dark and there was moisture in the breeze. The Met Office was sticking to its forecast of dry and cloudy with sunny spells as the moisture began to coalesce into a light drizzle sufficient enough to send Ben and Danny back into their car for shelter. The gloom persisted, prompting the captains to agree to play a 30 over match, though rain proper never really materialised.
The match in brief:
Choosing to field first, Captain Duncan Chave invited Ben and Mark Hailwood to open the bowling. After 10 tight overs they had pegged Tedburn to 34-2 (and both ended with excellent figures of 6-1-21-1). It was Trevor Bailey who coined the phrase ‘catches win matches’: at this stage the Erratics had dropped or missed sufficient chances to have already been well into the Tedburn tail and in a winning position – though to be fair, had Tedburn taken all their chances in the Erratics innings we might have been dismissed twice over. At first change, Pradeep Kumar kept up the pressure and was very unlucky not to get a wicket (returning figures of 6-1-21-0), while at the other end your reporter (at rather greater cost) did manage to dismiss both opener Sweet, for 27 – a second catch for Jonathan Kirby behind the stumps - and captain Allison for 12, caught well by Fraser Chave, (who, in my opinion, more than made up for all his earlier encounters with the slippery ball). At 20 overs Tedburn were 91-3 and had begun some lustier hitting. Duncan and Fraser contained them, and picked up another three wickets, but could not get rid of Barlow who carried his bat for a fine 61.
A total of 152 did not frighten us. With the benefit of several dropped catches, Duncan and Jonathan made a sound start reaching 29-1 off nine overs when Jonathan, who looked well set, holed out for 19. Danny offered good support to Duncan as he laid into the bowling and he had looked well set, before holing out for 31. Martin Weiler’s first ball enthusiasm asked far too much of Danny’s running between the wickets, but Martin made amends with support from Dan Thistlethwaite and Fraser, and he looked well set … before holing out for 36. So that was the story of our innings. Had Jonathan, Duncan or Martin managed to convert their good starts into a 60 we would probably have got there, but as the overs ran down the asking rate quickly grew and we ended up with 120-6, 32 runs short.
The distractions, in brief:
Jeff having a ‘North by North-West’ crop-duster moment as a low-flying helicopter headed straight for him.
Duncan admiring his glance to square leg as it beat the fielder, only to see it then stopped inches from the pavilion wall by the opposing captain’s boot, … and in the process failing to set off even for a single.
Gajendra Singh demonstrating why fielders should always use their hands rather than their feet: Arsenal’s Sanchez would have been proud of his clean volley, hit from a good 20 yards away from the goal (sorry, the boundary), which converted a single into a 4.
A suggestion that the Erratics organise a ‘fielding training camp’, somewhere in Spain .
A veritable thesaurus of suggested ‘appropriate names’ for cricketers, along the lines of Miss Dorothy Ball (Dot Ball) … sadly, despite spending an hour or more generating these suggestions during the Tedburn innings, I didn’t consider any of the other offerings worth repeating.
Mark’s suggestion that Dartmoor Brewery’s Jail Ale would have been better named Jale Ale (or perhaps simply J-ale)?
A reminder, to Fraser, that he still has a report to write ...
Just one match left in 2015 … and if we remain erratic it should bring revenge!
