Lucky Bandhu reports

Yarcombe and Stockland, the latest addition in Erratics fixtures is yet another beautiful fixture, which epitomises village cricket for me. After a long drive through the narrow roads and bucolic beauty, we found the Stockland ground in a small village, where the lack of amenities is pushing people to migrate but not the cricketers. It was probably the first time I saw large cups defining the boundary on one side. The consensus was that they were just large party cups and not from McDonalds, which were filled with stones (or some coke perhaps) to prevent them from flying. The lovely tea was made interesting by Mark H’s insights on a bowler’s performance after eating cakes. I would advise all opening bowlers to hide their cakes when Mark H is captaining. I am not sure he finished his cake after Chris asked him to open the bowling though.

On the field, we put up 187 on the board and won comfortably by 52 runs. After losing the toss, we were asked to bat first on a green wicket. Martin Wright and Ben A started the innings cautiously and gave a solid start before Martin played on while trying to accelerate. I came in next but did not last very long. The slowness of the pitch lured me into an expansive drive that only went as far as short midwicket. Ben A batted flawlessly at the other end to complete his half century, which was studded with quick singles and glorious high-elbow cover drives. Ben’s immediate departure after his half century was followed by two quick wickets in Martin Weiler and Matt Crawford. Jonathan, at the other end, kept finding the gaps and unfurled his trademark cuts and pulls in the latter half of his innings. He remained unbeaten on 72. The burst in the final overs from Jonathan and Mark H meant that we got seven more than what our skipper would have been happy with.

Jonathan was forced to sit out for the second innings due to his hamstring injury, Gary kindly subbed for him. Ben Y and Mark H started the proceedings with an immaculate line and length, giving nothing away for the first three overs. Ben Y made early inroads when he got the opener caught splendidly by Wright at slips and topped that with a late outswinging yorker that bowled their no. 3 batsman. Ben A removed the other opener in his first over, caught by Mark Phillips, who would take another brilliant catch later in the innings. I chipped in with a couple of wickets in my first spell. A dangerous hard-hitter, who was dealing only in sixes, was removed by Chris. There was an interesting comment against this batsman in the scorebook, which I regret to be unaware of (may be Jonathan could tell you more about it). (Jonathan says: "comment = words uttered by batsman when Chris did him with a slower ball and he spooned a simple catch to cover. They were uttered in manner that made them entirely audible from afar.) The top six batsmen were back in the hut without scoring many. Our ground fielding and catching were quite sharp till this point. The counter-attack from the lower order with some audacious shot-making, from one of them in particular, entertained the home team. Meanwhile, we dropped catches, caught and tumbled over to the boundary, and missed run outs. The late surge form Stockland was too little too late though, Mark P took an excellent catch at deep midwicket to end this partnership. Mark H was eventually rewarded in his final over for his economic performance. We cruised to a comfortable victory in the end.
