Cricket can sometimes be a game of clichés and one of the oldest and hoariest is that ‘catches win matches’. My answer to that is catching is impossible as I strived to prove at Killerton against the Nomads.

Your correspondent was nominated Skipper for the evening and won the toss, electing to field first, reasoning that we could chase any total that the opposition might be able to post. We opened with Carl Knappett and Phil Ellis both bowling well on a damp wicket. Scoring boundaries was nigh on impossible due to the damp outfield and after eight overs the score had reached 47 for 0. It should have of course been 47 for 1 but having cunningly placed myself at gully I contrived to drop a sitter steered directly towards me – in my defence I would say the ball was like a bar of Pears soap but really there can be no excuses.

Dominic Prosser then took up the attack bowling well without luck. The nearest he came to a wicket was when a catch at mid-on was dropped. A sharp chance which the fielder only saw at the last moment just before it thudded into the side of his face! I’m revealing no names but as a clue to his identity an anagram of his/her name is ‘I’m no person’!

Time to introduce Bill Parker who of course bowled beautifully throughout his four overs. When somebody remarked that bowling was ‘just a question of turning your arm over’ Bill quite rightly reminded them that there was quite a bit more to the art than that!

Throughout the innings the fielding was good and Jonathan Kirby kept wicket exceptionally well (no byes!) despite added pressure on him due to us being short of fielders forcing us to do away with a third man or fine leg for most of the innings. The Nomads score was 133 for 1 after 20 overs, the one wicket being an enthusiastically celebrated run out by Dominic Prosser. We should have taken more wickets but we felt the score was achievable.

The Erratics opened with confusion as to who would open! Ken Horne and Carl Knappett eventually drawing the short straws. Unfortunately the innings never really got going with Horne lbw early on and Knappett and Kirby following soon after. I really should have asked to examine the ball at some point as I suspect the Nomads switched it for a special catchable one. Although they did drop a couple just to make me feel better, they managed to cling on to five catches as the Erratics lurched along. The highspot of the innings was undoubtedly the partnership between Phil Ellis and John Curtis, Ellis eventually falling for 30 after nearly dislocating his shoulder hitting a six straight past the bowler!

The less said about the rest of the innings the better, the Erratics finally limping to 70. At least it was good to catch up with a few old faces, one such being the former occasional Erratic Michael Greco who thoroughly enjoyed beating us. As I left to go home he was walking past me with a crate of beer in his hand. Seeing me he made a motion to throw the beer towards me and shouted ‘catch!’ then paused, saying ‘You’d probably drop it mate!’ And do you know what? He was probably right!
