Match report Match Report by Jan Heaton:

It started so well. The sun was out. A full complement of Erratics was observed at 6:02pm (although only one of the Ide players was present then). And we were invited to bat first (I think) against an Ide team with only 10 in the field, plus Ed until their last player arrived a few overs in.

We started reasonably well on a pitch that skipper Gareth described as ‘soggy, soggy, soggy’. Indeed, there had been a deluge in the morning and we all set off for the game not really knowing if it would be dry enough to play. Andrew and Martin (Wright) opened. Andrew was out for a steady 6 and Martin was joined at the crease by Duncan, in good form. They formed a decent partnership, with Martin eventually making 21 and Duncan 25. After that, no one except Phil (Power) and Gareth with a late flurry, troubled the scorer (thanks Jeff), reaching the skipper’s target of 100+ just.

Your reporter for the day did not see all of her dismissal, which was one of the most bizarre she has suffered. As the ball was hit out in the space behind the bowler, she completed a run at the far end and turned to see if a second run was on. The fielder, meanwhile, had collected the ball and shied at the stumps at the bowler’s end and missed. As she turned and left her crease, she saw the ball roll past her and hit her wicket, breaking the bails and her heart. Ide rather apologetically appealed and so ended her innings.

So with 101 on the board we turned around. Unfortunately, Ed and Gareth had barely broken sweat when the heavens opened and we all got very wet before abandoning the game for the pub or the football on the telly. Two days later, I am still drying out…
