Lympstone v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 10 Jul 2008 at Unknown
Match was Tied

Match report Lympstone and the Erratics conjured up that rarest of cricket results – a tie – in this 20 over thriller. A quick check in the Erratics’ history books shows an interesting trend. The first three decades (1934 – 1963) didn’t see one tie. The next twenty years saw six and this figure was matched in the single ‘Glory Decade’ (1985-94) [Editor's note: Unfortunately four of the 'ties' noted in 'The Glory Decade' weren't ties at all as the side batting second hadn't been bowled out, but that's not particularly important. As Martin says, ties are rare]. As no-one has bothered to write a history of the subsequent seasons I’m not sure how many tied games there have been since. But to my knowledge (as I played in all of them) there have been at least three in the current decade and amazingly all three have been at Woodbury (2000 and 2005 v Sunsets and now 2008 v Lympstone).

For most current players Lympstone are new opponents. They folded about ten years ago but John Goss-Custard (ex-Sunsets) reformed them last year. In fact Lympstone were regular Erratics’ opponents of old – we fought it out on 21 occasions in the early days. Everyone agreed they had proved a welcome addition to the fixture list. They play cricket in a friendly fashion and laid on an excellent spread back in Lympstone afterwards. Following rainfall of epic proportions the day before few thought the game would be on. But despite a very squelchy outfield Woodbury’s artificial wicket meant play was possible. The toss proved unusual when the coin got stuck in upright position. After a second go Erratics’ skipper Ferro won the toss and inserted Lympstone. They made a slow start with Ellis and Burrows in mean mood, Ellis bowling their promising looking young opener. But gradually the batsmen picked up the scoring rate before Matt Cook announced his presence in this his first game of the season. Firstly his lively throw hit keeper Turner on the toe and then he took a double wicket maiden in his first over. Lympstone got back on track with some good late runs and posted a competitive 114-5.

In reply the Erratics were also slow off the mark. This led one colleague in the pavilion to venture that “this isn’t buttering any parsnips”. This led to a wide ranging discussion on vegetables and somehow moved onto how Erratics’ custard should be served (“pink with a unicorn in the middle”) and then to the possibilities of unicorn shaped sandwiches. Thankfully Wright and Davies started upping the scoring rate and conversation turned back to the cricket. Some brilliant if dangerous running rattled the fielders who contributed to their own decline by gifting 34 extras including 20 wides.

Almost in tune with our improving prospects, the ground was bathed in sunshine. “Sunset over Woodbury; what could be nicer?” was one verdict. It was no surprise that both Wright and Davies succumbed to run outs but their partnership had set up the chance of victory. Ferro pushed things on and suddenly we needed just 10 from the final over. A few more blows from the skipper, a sacrificial run out and it was all down to two needed from the last ball. Matt Turner came out to face it and he confidently stroked the single that ensured a tie.

“You’d pay to watch that” said a joyous Erratic. “Well you are going to” came the response. “Match subs are £3”.
