Some Sunday afternoon games for the Erratics have been defined by the weather in that the winning of the toss (which skipper Chris Ferro did) has resulted in one team toiling in the field in sweltering heat. Not so for us on this blustery Sunday afternoon but more on the weather later …

Anyway, Chris put Newton Poppleford in to bat and as you will see from the final NP score, it reads more like an evening Twenty 20 than a 40 overs game. This might have something to do with the fact that the umpires needed binoculars to ascertain whether a boundary had been achieved (it seemed twice as far as last Thursday). However, more important was the incredibly accurate bowling by the Erratics' leading bowlers. In James's 5th over Jonathan and I (keeper and slip) agreed that this spell was the best we had seen from him all season so he was unlucky to have not taken more than the one wicket. James was replaced by Nigel Rutherford, back from his injury at Denbury, and he (also bowling with the wind) slipped into the same corridor recently vacated - the played and missed shots seemed to be alternate balls for both bowlers. Nigel's trademark inswing was difficult for the batsmen to play and he finished with a couple of wickets at less than 2 per over.

At the other end, we were no less costly and man-of the-match Peter Cox bowled a devastating 4 wickets for 17 from 7 overs. Chris Ferro also bowled tightly and, replacing Nigel, James Fox took a couple of wickets, albeit a little more expensively than the rest. I think it was fair to say that we were pleased to have bowled Newton Poppleford out for as few as 119 from 35 of the 40 overs.

Over tea there was a sharp shower and it was said that this was good timing as were not out playing…mmmmm … but more on the weather later!

The Erratics opened with Tom Clay (loaned from Newton Poppleford) and Sam Fox who were developing a good partnership before Sam was bowled after a couple of fine shots for 4. Tom was joined by Jonathan who continued with his unfortunate dismissals (see Denbury report) when he chested a ball to the floor that spun back and rolled on to his stumps. Jonathan later said that he had time to kick it away but seemed to be mesmerised by its strange trajectory as it bowled him.

Meanwhile, the stylish Tom was developing an excellent innings (four 4s and one 6) before been stumped for 32. This dismissal brought the key partnership for the Erratics as Chris Ferro and Peter Cox came to the wicket to battle against tight bowling and the increasingly muddy pitch as the rain came back. Chris eventually went for 23 driving to Mid Off. This wicket engendered the worry of an Erratics collapse as Nigel was bowled first ball (also by Matt Raistrick) but Ed Keedwell managed to survive the bowling for a while but not the driving rain that eventually brought the teams off for 15 mins until it subsided to a drizzle.

Ed went soon after the the return and was followed by Tristram Neale shortly after. By now we were closing in on the runs required through Peter's excellent shot choice. We passed the Newton Poppleford total with 4 overs and 2 wickets to spare and an unbeaten 37 for Peter - a great all round performance from him!

And so, somewhat bedraggled we went to the Cannon Inn and discussed the match and all things cricket and beyond with each other and the ever-friendly Newton Poppleford team. Another good team performance all round.
