Jokes were the order of the day here although the first such joke, our batting, is best described as schadenfreude as we amassed just 72 runs in the original timed game. Things started positively enough with Matt and Mark P keeping out some high-quality swing bowling from both ends until Mark P was LBW and we were roughly 8/1. This brought in Al Brunt who strode purposefully to the wicket. The commentators on TMS often talk about booking yourself in for a long stay at the crease, but Al went the extra mile here by locking the rest of the team out of the dressing room as he left. Unfortunately his stay was not as prolonged as he would have liked, and this preceded a collapse where Matt, Al, our Denbury ringer Simon, and Mark H all departed cheaply although not until Mark had managed to injure his knee (injury 1). I managed to keep out the hat-trick ball but departed a couple of overs later trying to pull a ball that never got above shin-high, even on my shins. This brought Simon Orpen to the crease (or the Orpenator as he shall be known from this day forth) without whom a far more paltry total would have been on the cards. Despite getting hit flush on the toe early on (injury 2), he played watchfully and then more expansively as wickets fell at the other end, including a particularly enterprising last wicket stand with our other Denbury ringer, Chris Saunders. Eventually Chris was bowled through the gate from a ball that showed appreciable turn and we were all-out at 72/9 with Simon unbeaten on 23.

As the Erratics innings had only taken approximately 1hr 15 minutes to complete, we suffered the indignity of fielding before we'd had tea, although the hope was that the lack of cake might improve our performance in the field. Chris Fear also announced that Countryfile was being repeated at 5pm and there was now hope that he would be able to make it back to watch it, so it wasn't all bad news. Defending such a small total was never going to be easy, but Chris S and Varun opening the bowling made life difficult for the batsmen with a good deal of movement in the air. I dropped a catch early on at mid-on and injured a finger in the process (injury 3) with the other Mount Edgcumbe opening bat making life look particularly easy at the other end. Chris then pulled a hamstring (injury 4) and was unable to bowl, reducing Matt's bowling options still further. The skipper brought himself on and took a couple of wickets and Chris F bowled some nice medium pace swing, but it never looked like being enough and Mt Edgcumbe strolled home for the loss of three wickets.

At tea we were left to lick our wounds. "Time to start the post-mortem." Simon said, "The sausage rolls are nice." came the reply. And so for the next joke. What has 14 working legs and doesn't know when to quit? You guessed it. A 10 over a side match was hastily arranged with Mark H now taking over the reins.

Simon and Chris were invited to resume their stand from the last innings and with an injury apiece, it's fair to say that quick singles were never on the agenda, although Simon showed that he was still seeing it like a football with some lusty blows, unfortunately mostly at the opposition fielders. However, the real star of our batting performance was Matt Cook who, coming in at 4 and released from the straightjacket of captaincy, took the attack to the bowlers and ended with 40* out of our total of 68/5, just 4 short of our first innings total. Spare a thought though for Chris Fear, who having played and missed apparently decided that he might yet be able to catch the end of John Craven's report on the decline of badger habitats, made off towards the carpark and was run out by the wicketkeeper.

Our performance in the field was better than you might expect from a team fielding just 6 fully-fit players and with almost everyone needing to bowl. There were wickets for Chris F opening the bowling and the Orpenator, who got one to almost land on the stumps. This brought out one of the Mt Edgcumbe batsmen, who approached the crease "as though he were the bearer of some regrettable news" said Chris Fear. Simon also got his wicket in comedy fashion as he attempted a switch-hit and was bowled. Tight bowling and committed fielding meant that 5 were needed from the final over, but alas we weren't quite able to restrict them and we suffered our second loss of the day but at least it was close this time.

We retired to the Edgcumbe Arms a surprisingly upbeat outfit given the day's events, probably in part due to the very friendly opposition and the spectacular scenery. Chris S said he had taken a hi-tech 360 degree panorama... of the Quiche (a flanorama then surely?), which led Matt to observe that 'Quiches win matches'. Matt is available for Weddings and Barmitzvahs...
