Match Report: Simon Orpen

After the disappointment of our Painswick match being cancelled the Erratics tour 2009 got under way at Frocester. As anyone who has played here will know, Frocester have one of the best grounds that we play at with facilities that wouldn’t disgrace a county club. They also have strength in numbers and often field several teams at the same time. Despite all this they always manage to provide a great welcome and even their most competitive players manage to embrace the friendly cricket ethic, something that cannot be said of all sides we play!

Frocester batted first and James and Gareth opened the bowling. James was, as they say nowadays ‘on fire’ and his sharp, accurate bowling soon had Frocester in disarray. The first two wickets fell without a run on the electronic board and at one point the score was 4 for 3. Unfortunately we did manage to drop their best batsman twice within a few balls, once at slip and once at gully. I won’t name names but we know who we are! Whincup, C didn’t need any more lives and proceeded serenely to 98 before James saved him any jug-buying obligations by splattering his stumps!

There was some decent bowling from Gareth, David, captain Chris and myself which restricted the Frocester total to 165 for 7. James ended with 3 wickets. Gareth and myself 2 each .

The Erratics innings was opened by Chris Mellett and Chris Ferro (it will soon be law that you have to be called Chris to play for the team - I’ll be ok as my middle name is Christopher!) Chris Mellett played a Tavare-like innings and although he only scored a single his determination in seeing off the opening bowling was worth much more. He fell with the score on 26 and for a while it really looked like we might record our second ever victory at this ground.

Unfortunately as so often seems to be the case, nobody could stay with Chris Ferro long enough. Penny Price probably showed the best technique for her 10 but nobody else made double figures. When Chris was out for 65 the game was up and 123 was our final score.

After more food and drinks we thanked the young Frocester side and pledged to make a better effort next year. Back then to the Anchor for post match analysis and the usual tour stuff.
