Ipplepen v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 14 May 2006 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report by Matt Cook

The Erratics took to the field skippered by Chris Cook, able to provide fine advice due to his having played against Ipplepen on the previous afternoon. He had at his disposal a fine array of Erratic talent and put it to good use in notching up another victory for the side. The fine start to the season continued as Cook lost the toss and was put in the field.

The Erratics allowed the openers a decent start before they began to slowly eat their way through the top order, ultimately leaving Adam Thomas the merciless pleasure of splintering the stumps with the last ball of 40 overs; the youngster whose wicket he claimed had had little opportunity to add to Ipplepen's total of 186.

The track was somewhat lifeless and had left Thomas somewhat disillusioned with "fast" bowling, perhaps this was what resulted in his fearsome final fizzer. The fielding was typically erratic, although there were few dropped catches.

The bowling too was a little wild, his usual steady accuracy would elude even the captain on this occasion - and in addition his two sons swung between control and chaos in an instant, as too did Knappett, although his soccer-strained ankle may have been largely to blame. Peter Hinds' outswing spell improved greatly, and he eventually bowled some of the Erratics' best balls.

After the gratefully devoured tea, the Erratics set out to chase down the score, but were wary of a difficult run chase on a rather unadventurous wicket and long set of boundaries. Nevertheless they were comfortably driven there through the solid and unrivalled determination that led to Nick Birbeck's 50.

His application was rewarded with some fine back and front foot strokes, and a healthy amount of running between the wickets. Support for the star came in brief but bountiful cameos from the two elder Cooks, Knappett (whose straight drive up-the-hill was perhaps shot of the game), Thomas and Weiler. So the Erratics eventually cruised home with some overs to spare. Another victory under the belt and in typically good spirit to boot. How long can the winning streak last?
