Lustleigh v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 11 Jun 2006 at 2pm
Match was Drawn

Match report by Nick Birbeck

The searing heat of the previous week relented to leave the Lustleigh ground looking its spectacular best and inviting to the home side who fielded first. The luckless Mcrae was bowled early on and spent the rest of the innings tending to his new daughter whose national cricketing loyalties must still be subject to some concern to her father. Molins and Birbeck took the score to over 50 with the former striking some hefty blows, one of which almost did for your correspondent at the umpire's end (the photo may even show the said event).

The introduction of a new bowler then accounted for Molins, Birbeck and Weiler in somewhat soft circumstances leaving Cook and Knappett out in the middle. Both batsmen played themselves in and began to look increasingly comfortable. Knappett then took on a more dominant role and played some beautiful shots around the ground, some of which ended inevitably in the stream so familiar to anyone who has visited this glorious location. Knappett reached his 50 in quick time but was bowled soon after. Cook then took on the mantle and began to dismantle the opposition with some fierce hitting which resulted in continuous searches for balls in both stream and long-grassed meadow. He was ably assisted by Horne who in the latter stages surprised himself (and others) with an exquisite off-drive to the boundary. A total of 225 looked to be more than adequate.

The Erratics took to the field after the customary sumptuous tea with conditions overcast yet perfect for an evening's cricket. Lustleigh resistance however proved strong with the opening partnership proving highly resilient. The bowling was opened by Lisk and Orpen, the former bowling an extended spell that was of excellent quality yet gained few rewards with some extremely close appeals turned down by Berry. The opening partnership was finally broken by Orpen who had the batsmen hit a ball down the throat of Cook fielding at deep mid-off. A few dropped catches then ensued and it looked as though a victory was going to be unlikely.

The departure of the opening Wright, slashing outside off stump and nicking Burrows to your correspondent behind the stumps, provided some encouragement. The dismissal perhaps provided the only noteworthy moment of controversy as the keeper wasted very little time in throwing the ball in the air once 'pouched'. However, the customary celebratory toss evaded the gloves on its descent and a referral to a third umpire might indeed have had Wright returning to the crease. The introduction of Burrows proved to be the fillip that the Erratics needed and he bowled with pace and accuracy that eventually provided him with 3 well-deserved wickets. However, time was not on our side and the game rather fizzled out in the end with neither side having what it needed to win the game.

The trophy therefore remained with the Lustleigh side and we look forward to winning it back next season.
