Exactly as I always remember it in spring, Chulmleigh's ground was verged on all sides by a fine mist. Light rain was to cycle on and off throughout, as an intriguing match developed.

It was the Erratics who were sent out first, JK having lost the toss. Ben and Gareth opened well, though it was evident that the ball was hard to control, and Chulmleigh's openers did a decent job. Gareth however, picked up the wicket of Darch ten overs in.

Ben's fine opening burst had received little reward, and it was over to Sangikar to employ his unusual right-arm round. Having already slipped in the outfield, his approach to the crease was noticeably tentative, but two overs in he dismissed Chulmleigh's useful-looking young opener.

Catching in the outfield wasn't too hot off Fraser Chave, who benefited from some fruity lift out of the green spring wicket. I own to dropping two, Chave senior one, before Sangikar finally did Fraser's bowling justice, catching Sheahann. The South African did manage a few clean hits first however. First the cow, then the sheep fields, but in the end he ran out of livestock.

Jeff and Dunc took a couple of wickets before Ben and Gareth took 3 more wickets in their return spells.

Duncan and Fraser opened tidily before Fraser tired of the rain and hoisted one up to Sheahann, who seemed ubiquitous throughout. Krups added ten more, before a mix-up in slippery conditions saw him run out. I came to the crease, and Dunc and I had a bit of a partnership, before I holed out (again to Sheahann).

By this stage, I think our opposition were growing in confidence, but Dunc began the fightback with some nice fours and sixes over the shorter boundary, ably aided by Danny, Jonathan and Sangikar.

The gloaming approached, and in a last attempt to thwart Duncan's measured chase, Captain Parcell looked to Sheahann for answers. Each delivery from the big man seemed to come after a longer interval, as the field was adjusted. Finally the tension was broken as Duncan smote several more boundaries off Heimann's penultimate over, and it only took he and "The Finisher" Gareth Oughton a few singles to win the match.

A rare victory at Chulmleigh, and a glorious 95 from Duncan Chave, that will be hard for any Erratic to top this summer, due to the resilience required in such dank conditions. Hooray!
