Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 20 May 2016 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 17 runs
Match report
It's only 20 overs Dan, said Jeff by way of reassuring me of the amount I would have to write as opposed to a full 40 over weekend game. Jeff, so much happened you could write a book on it!
Anyway it shouldn't be daunting, it's an opportunity to describe a unique event with an unknown ending and always containing surprises and acts of valour, intelligence, cunning, physical prowess, strategy and skill.
It rained ... a lot. "They" said it would, but we played through it to the end. We won the toss, and skipper Jeff shrewdly thought to field first with the idea that the worst rain was due around 8.30 and we could just bat in it. Forgetting sodden umpires and outfield.
The Erratics were terrific! Great accurate bowling, spirited, intelligent, tireless fielding and outstanding batting performances by some (come on it's the Erratics) players.Unfortunately the Sunsets were also terrific and played valiantly through the wet and slippery conditions.
Ben Youngman and Fraser Chave opened the bowling and kept to a good line and length. But their opener Perryman started to hit some boundaries and their score began climbing. His partner Jones tried to join in and cracked a good ball from Youngman but straight into the hands of the cool Ferro fielding at mid on. He managed to hang on to it with the score only on 17. This precipitated a mini collapse with their number 3 Greaves holing out to Matt Crawford, who took a tremendous catch in the deep at long off, from the bowling of Fraser. He had just prevented one boundary and narrowly missed a difficult chance but made sure of this one. His fielding was basically what inspired my adjectives in the third paragraph. The score was now 18. With the next wicket to fall the score had only moved on to 19, the bowler? Danny Williamson. With his first ball he bowled Hill, clattering his stumps and sending the bails spinning and flashing in the gloomy light. (The Sunsets were using special T20 bails that lit up). Broome was next, out lbw also to Williamson. Hey, we're on a roll but this is cricket and the Sunsets consolidated with both Bridge and Wilson joining the opener who had retired on 31 in setting about building a partnership. They put on more than 50 runs together and despite the best efforts of our bowlers and enthusiasm in the field the score started to reach a worrying level. Then Duncan Chave came on and bowled their number 8, more fireworks. But best of all the irrepressible Danny Williamson fielding at long on, hurling himself to stop a boundary, picked up the ball, spun round, aimed and threw, resulting in a spectacular run out. That was their number 9 gone after an enthusiastic performance from him. Which just left skipper Jeff to bowl Chalky for 13. We had kept them to 126 after some very powerful hitting. A good score in the conditions but one we all thought we could better.
Jeff decided on a double Martini to open our batting and Wright and Weiler ventured to the crease. Martin Wright was shaken and soon making his way back to the bar terrace but Weiler was stirred into action and immediately began hitting clean drives to the boundaries and deft late cuts. Kirby had joined him and was also playing well with his own trademark cuts and drives. Despite the rain this was looking effortless! I had noticed that in previous years Martin had always batted well at this ground (and elsewhere) but he was eventually bowled for a terrific 26. Matt Crawford continued to keep the score moving with some positive strokes then Kirby was caught after making a valuable 16. Perryman got his second wicket when he ct and b Williamson, which left the second father and son partnership of the game at the crease. Duncan and Fraser Chave battled on braving the elements.
However, the rain grew heavier and the outfield, batsmen and umpires all became sodden. The sky darkened and inevitably the scoring slowed with shots that had earlier made it to the boundary becoming ones and twos. Then unfortunately Duncan Chave got out to a slightly dubious lbw. He's in fine form and we may have been able to make up the difference of 17 runs if he had stayed. But now it was Ferro who took up the fight with some intelligent and very quick running between the wickets, even by his standards. Combined with some hard accurate hitting, he and Fraser put together a good partnership of 32. The Sunsets were real troopers, sticking it out in the field, slipping and sliding trying to protect their total. Ferro was helped by Ben Youngman, absolutely soaked after a good stint of umpiring, then Jeff Haynes, but the sunsets prevailed by 17 runs.
The warm, dry bar was a welcome sight after a game that tested English spirits.
