Match report
"Not that it matters, but most of what follows is true."
I believe this is the opening line for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Now do I see myself as Paul Newman or Robert Redford, actually not that difficult as I’m not aware of either of them wearing an earring, however a pirate on a bicycle, mmmm? Almost as good to watch as Chris Ferro playing football with a space-hopper. This opening for a report on an Erratics match against Broadclyst at Killerton might seem strange, but it is very intimidating writing a report just after having received President Thomson’s Erratic Cricket Prints.
A Summer game in Devon – it rained, just after Captain Kirby won (?) the toss and we batted, After some strong, persistent drizzle, we had a series of convincing partnerships 45 from Ben Abrahams (43) and Andrew Forrester (19), this was an opening partnership of substance, that not only blunted a very good opening bowling partnership, but scored at a good rate too, this wasn’t an easy wicket, 41 from Mark Wright (15) - whose first two scoring shots were a four and glorious straight 6 - and Jayakrupakar Nallala (47), and 82 from Krups (47) and Mark Hailwood (not out 34) with Jon Kirby (not out 6). Some of the shot making was impressive on such a lively pitch. Equally impressive was Krups holding himself in check against Phil Walker snr. his league captain Chris Ferro, spotted Krups desire to bat him higher in the order. Tea arrived, homemade and wonderful and Captain Kirby declared 184 for 4, a good total.
Before the game Gary Abrahams had been discussing the likelihood of ‘DRS’ coming into all cricket? TS Eliot's classic lines come to mind - "Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?" The digital age makes these words ring true, would we need the umpires to review their decisions in the game? The inventor of Hawk-Eye, Paul Hawkins, has developed a system for detecting edges in club cricket, using a small, attachable sensor and a smartphone app.
Captain Kirby put together some challenging bowling partnerships, indeed his instinctual decisions just worked. Ben Youngman (9 overs 1-21) and Gareth Oughton (9 overs 3-18), Jeff Haynes (3 overs 1-30) and Mark Hailwood (5 overs 1-15), Chris Ferro (4 overs 2-12) – it’s strange to write about an Erratics game without Chris featuring everywhere, but typically he asked to be batted lower in the order, having just scored a century for Clyst - and Phil Power (4 overs 1-5), followed by Ben Abrahams (2 overs 0-1). The Broadclyst innings had moments of aggression particularly from C. Craven (Bowled Oughton for 37 from 24 balls). Its often easy to forget the keeper, but not today, Andrew with four catches, including the ninth wicket of Ken Horne, standing up to Ben. Peter would have enjoyed this union of white-bearded keepers. The wickets fell at 30, 71, 77, 78, 78 (two in two from Gareth), 83, 96, 96 and 103 – 105 for 9. How do you describe a ‘winning’ draw in declaration cricket? "We won - we were better" or "We won - perhaps we were better." Winning and losing are certainly evidence; but they are not the only evidence. We have to give credit to Rob Scott (1 not out from 53 balls). Although eleven cricketers make a cricket team, when the time comes to bowl your first delivery, walk out to bat or take a catch, your teammates can't do it for you and it's up to you as an individual to perform. There exists a culture of respect towards your teammates, the opposition and most importantly, the umpires. Now could we have used DRS? It’s the last over and Gareth appeals, and Phil Walker snr. is given out LBW, from front on and directly behind I’m sure this was clear, however there was another noise and the suggestion of hitting the bat as well. We called Phil back and the game was drawn. Erractics cricket, for all its flaws, retains at least a breath of something gloriously pure and gloriously sporting.
