Tale Millers v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 04 Aug 2016 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 1 run
Match report
It's a funny - and fun - fixture this one, and although this was only its second year on the fixture list for us it has already provided some memorable moments: last year a dramatic smash-and-grab victory for our hosts, this year us holding on in the final over to win by just 1 run.
We had struggled to settle with the bat, partly because the wickets had been rather hastily set up and didn't line up with each other - it was surprising just how off-putting this was, and made the line of the ball very hard for batsmen to read (and, for bowlers, to get right) and only Matt and Krups made a decent fist of it. That is, until Ben Youngman came in and proceeded to hit his first and second sixes for the Erratics in quick time on the way to recording a personal best of 23 not out and taking us to the sort of total - just over 100 - that looks rather modest but which we tend to excel at defending.
Their innings is a bit of a blur in my mind - it was one of those games as captain where I always felt that I was lagging a few moves behind, and my sense of losing control was only exacerbated by the rapidly setting sun and the instruction from the umpire to rattle through our overs. So we just got on with it without too much tactical input from me, with mixed success, and although we took regular wickets they were always up with the rate, making good use of the short boundaries.
What I do remember is that it came to the final over with our hosts needing something like 4 runs to win - Ben Youngman bowled it, and did so with utter surety, and backed up by a heroic diving stop from your not-so-humble narrator from the penultimate ball they needed 1 to tie, 2 to win from the last ball. They couldn't get it away, a run out ensued, and we clung on.
Tale Millers are great hosts, and a post-match pork chop (or veggie burger) was gratefully received at the end of another thriller.
