Crediton Inn vs The Erratics, 11th August 2016?
Less than a month on from a tight 9 run victory for Crediton Inn, could this be the sequel to eclipse all others?
Having won the toss, Jonathon asked the home team to bat, who very kindly lent us a fielder. As we assembled in the field, it was pointed out that the side must have been one of youngest, at least while I’ve been playing!
A stiff breeze but the sun was shining, ‘play’ was called.
Our hosts raced the score along, attacking shots regularly finding the boundary. Debutant George was unlucky not to take a wicket with his first ball, the Crediton Inn fielder spilling a catch at midwicket. Mark Phillips displayed more of his stonewall fielding, I’m yet to see the ball travel through him. Rob took a wicket after Krups caught behind and a rather long wait from the umpire; Mark Hailwood took two wickets including one with a disguised slower which the batsman mistimed and had his stumps clattered.
They sprinted to 100 from the first 12 overs and eventually finished on 170-3, with three men also retired after reaching 30.
In the reply, Gareth and Krupakar opened, the former offering some catching practice for the fielding, before running out of lives and beginning a mini-collapse. Luckily George came in to steady the ship (and would later end as the Erratics top scorer) while Krups continued to play some fine shots.
Krups eventually middled to deep midwicket, not quite clearing the fielder. But this allowed Nick to enter the scene, who clattered a number of fours but was then also caught. A quick 16 from Jonathon was sandwiched between an unfortunate stumping for Hailwood, and another for Youngman, meant after 20 overs the final total was 106-9.
So no, not a classic sequel to add to the list, but a couple of great performances from the debutants as well as a hearty tea meant all went home satisfied.
