Tedburn St Mary v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 09 Oct 2016 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Matt Cook reports...
The dew-soaked grass, the early start, the spikeless shoes, the autumnal sunlight dropping orange, the jolly Tedburn lads. It must be the last game of the season.
Danny and I volunteered ourselves to the oppo, who were a couple short. Erratics captain Krups would still have remained confident, with a strong batting and bowling side - bolstered by the welcome return of Nigel Rutherford, who hasn't played nearly enough this year!
It was Tedburn that made a solid start. Doc managed to spank a ball through forward point for four, and subsequently lost the only newish ball for the better part of the innings. Eventually Doc's wicket fell, and I went in.
Facing the Erratics was a difficult experience. I felt like a delinquent brought before police. Two-way glass stood between me and the Erratics I know and (used to) love. Their faces were impassive, steely.
First came the bad cops, Nick and Nigel, bowling yorker after yorker and suppressing the rate. But it was good cop Weiler that did for me and more besides. He's had success at Tedburn before, and today was no different. At the top end, Nigel was replaced by Penny, who also continued her good bowling form. She can count herself pretty unlucky to have come in at tea with only one or two wickets (one an excellent catch by Matt Crawford, fielder of the season), having hit the stumps without dislodging the bail, and seeing several chances go down, including one hit straight back at her. It dallied at the tips of her fingers for an eternity, before tumbling out of reach.
Some good hitting meant we (Tedburn) were still in line for a decent 35-over score. It ended around 176 which didn't seem too bad on a grassy October outfield (bypassing it entirely seemed the most effective strategy).
We started off well with the ball too, Pete bowling some fine offies and Danny Williamson charging in and doing for Fraser Chave. Andrew Forrester came in and hit some glorious drives, but he too chipped out.
We had the Erratics 70-something for five, and it looked a tricky finish for Ferro and Krups, lurking down the order. But they quickly got to work, first seeing off Doc's tidy spell down the hill, then taking my own bowling utterly apart. There was joy in Krupakar's fine and late cuts, and a ruthless vigour to Chris's thumping pulls that was a real pleasure.
The ball was passed around, and Corky at least showed how spin should really be done, but Chris and Krups saw the innings home with five overs, and light, to spare. A victorious farewell to another wonderful season.
