Match Report by Simon Orpen

Lustleigh on a sunny Sunday in July is about as perfect a setting for a friendly cricket match as it gets. This is one of our longest established fixtures and is played for the John Lloyd trophy which has taken on something of the mythical itself having been mislaid some years ago. Some our more recent recruits probably find the existence of this trophy as fanciful as the existence of the rampant pink unicorn but to true believers they are both out there, biding their time…

Having duly lost the toss we were asked to field by the Lustleigh captain. This suited me fine as I would have fielded anyway, despite the sunshine. It soon became apparent that the pitch which was being used for the first time this season had something of Dunsford circa 2009 about it. From the pavilion end balls kept low and lower with the very occasional one bouncing a bit more. James Burrows opened from this end and was soon wondering whether he’d made the right choice as from the other end Nigel Rutherford was bowling a tight spell of lively and bouncy medium pace.

As the pitch dried out somewhat James started to get some exaggerated sideways movement which allied with the bounce made run scoring very difficult. For most of the innings the run rate was two or less per over and when James and Nigel both took breakthrough wickets things were looking very rosy indeed. Both opening bowlers had excellent spells and shared five wickets between them. I replaced James at the variable bounce end and David Pearson worked his magic from the other taking four wickets for 45. Our fielding was excellent and so was our catching as we bowled Lustleigh out for 126, well within my target of 140.

An excellent tea was followed by Al Brunt and David Pearson opening the innings. Things started off badly with two wickets for Paul Foot in the first over and got even worse when he accounted for Chris Fear. Nigel Rutherford built an innings of 28 to give us some hope but wickets continued to clatter as Foot remained virtually unplayable on his way to six wickets for eighteen runs.

It’s always going to be unlikely that a side that has six batsmen ‘failing to trouble the scorer’ goes on to win a game like this but innings from Andrew Forrester and Phil Ellis almost got us there. Andrew showed real class and next time I captain him I won’t let him get away with persuading me to bat him down the order! While Phil and he were together there was a real chance we could inch across the line but unfortunately it wasn’t to be with Phil being last man out for a top score of 36. We had fallen short by fifteen runs which was a pretty good effort after having been in disarray at 35 for5.

After the game we had drinks at the Cleve and resolved to find a replacement for the John Lloyd trophy for next year unless either it or the pink unicorn appears in the meantime.
