Match report
by Jonathan Kirby
Working backwards...
After the match, I was kindly driven home by Martin Wright. As we passed the top of Wrefords Lane, on the northern outskirts of Exeter Martin blithely informed me, and fellow traveler Chris Ferro, that he had been arrested 3 times at this particular spot. This seemed improbable, so I probed. I had misheard. It turned out that Martin had only been arrested once at the top of Wrefords Lane, on suspicion of attempting to steal a load of bricks from a building site. The nature of one of the other arrests is classified. The third arrest, it turns out, was in Burkina Faso, near the border with Mali, when the Burkina Faso army decided that he (wearing a patch over one eye) was in fact a spy working for the French Foreign Legion. Peter Thomson missed a scoop here. I wonder what other bizarre Erratifacts are still to be uncovered among us? Maybe Peter should start researching a second edition of his excellent Erratic Cricket Prints?
Bizarre Erratifacts bring me to Ben Youngman's car, which had been through a car wash at lunchtime today after experiencing intimate and loving contact with a herd of cows at Killerton on Sunday. Cows obviously love a clean car, because as he was about to leave Killerton today, Wednesday, Ben once again found cattle lovingly nuzzling his motor. We shooed the cows away, but not before the smears of bovine affection had once more been applied. I guess Ben will be doing business at the car wash again tomorrow. I also suspect that he will avoid driving to our next match at Killerton, whenever that might be. Kind-hearted Erratics might offer him a lift.
Earlier still, we had exacted revenge on Rob Scott for his 43-ball innings for just 1 run that had saved the match against us on Sunday. When I say “we”, I’m more accurately referring to Chris Ferro, who battered a Rob Scott over for 20 runs. Rob had opened the Broadclyst Pins’ batting in belligerent fashion, bashing his first ball to the boundary as if to say “I could have done that on Sunday if I’d wanted to”. He shouldn’t have provoked us further. Rob’s 3 overs went for a total of 47 runs, with the consolation wicket of Martin Wright. If Chris Ferro had been ruthlessly efficient in his brutal treatment of Rob, Phil Power was calm, elegant and casual in the dismissive way he raced to 20 with just 5 scoring shots. After the match, Rob said that he felt suitably chastened, and that he much preferred playing for the Erratics than playing against us.
Although that one Rob Scott over may have been pivotal, the Erratics’ batting was, in fact, pretty good from the very start. Confronted once again with some excellent opening bowling from Messrs Davey and Phillips, Martin Weiler and Martin Wright nonetheless made good headway by running quick singles, and turning 1s into 2s with fast running – even if Wright’s backing-up nearly led to a Mankad incident. Too often, I think the Erratics are slow to get the score moving in a 20-20 game. Our two Martins here gave us excellent momentum.
Amazingly, in spite of the quick singles, Martin Wright didn’t manage to run anyone out – not even himself. Now, it’s true that Danny Williamson failed to make a single that should have been his call, and he says that he was sure he heard “someone” call for it, but Martin emphatically denies having done so. There’s something going on between these two, however, because they had earlier collided in the field when both went for the catch that Rob Scott (who else?) had steepled off the bamboozling spin of Phil Power.
Although Martin later told us that he had heard someone yell “mine”, he nonetheless opted to grasp the ball himself, and managed to hold onto it when both he and Danny fell to the ground. Danny denies having called for it. And no-one else had heard any kind of shout – we’d been helplessly transfixed by the sight of the imminent collision.
Danny Williamson. Sigh. Danny nearly took three brilliant catches. One would have been the catch of the century. There were more, but he sometimes contrived to be up to 40 metres away from where the ball landed.
Danny bowled well, as did all our bowlers, though some didn’t get the luck they deserved. Jeff Haynes beguiled, leading to no fewer than 3 stumpings, and Gareth Oughton positively revelled in the bounce he extracted from another hard Killerton wicket. Gareth’s 4 overs included 2 maidens and went for a total of just 6 runs.
This excellent effort restricted the Broadclyst Pins to just 108, after Phillips and Davey had appeared to have set the scene for a much larger score.
Our batting response was such that we won with more than 7 overs to go, which must make this one of the most emphatic 20-20 wins we have ever achieved.
Yet we did this with only 10 men. Now, I was the captain 3 days ago, when we were denied victory by the obdurate resistance of a certain Rob Scott. I don’t bear any grudges, but I hope he remembers how much he prefers playing for us as opposed to playing against us. He could have played for us today. I hope he’ll make a wiser decision if this situation arises again.
The funny thing about playing with only 10 is that, when you’re fielding, you invariably seem to be missing more than 1 player. There seem to be gaps in the field everywhere. This was the first problem that captain Gareth Oughton had had to solve when we took to the field today. But that was at the beginning of the match, so it’ll be here that the report will end.
