Match report Match Report: Gareth Oughton

This latest 20:20 game for the Erratics took place on a lovely June evening, with the Erratics facing the relatively unusual prospect of playing on an artificial wicket. The journey was pleasant and despite a few traffic issues, the 90 minutes it was meant to take felt much more like 45 minutes. I’m sure this was more down to the quality of company, and nothing to do with the generous timing given on the directions section of the website. The Erratics’ line-up featured three debutants, in the shape of Bethan & Steve Davey, as well as Chris Ingham.

Lympstone opted to bat first and their opening pair started relatively well, finding the odd single and playing themselves in. Despite an economical spell from Oughton (3-0-5-0) and Ellis bowling well without reward (teasing the edge on more than one occasion), a change was needed to break the opening partnership. With this in mind, Chris called upon Ed Keedwell and the flighty spin of Davey. The change reaped an immediate reward, with Philippa picking up her first wicket for the Erratics. Davey finished with figures of 3-0-25-2 and though she and Keedwell were punished at times by the aggressive hitting of the Lympstone batting attack, the game was still up for grabs. James Burrows and Andrew Crawford came into the attack next, with Crawford sadly falling victim to the same treatment given to Davey and Keedwell (this wasn’t Crawford’s day sadly, having received a physical battering from a particularly brutal drive when fielding in the covers earlier in the innings) but the aggressive and frankly brilliant Burrows returned figures of 3-0-9-1, slowing the onslaught and ridding us of one of their dangermen. Ferro brought himself on at the end and bowled magnificently, sending down a couple of ruthless bouncers (the artificial wicket was certainly a lively one!) amongst his whippy line-and-length balls, returning figures of 3-0-14-3 which included the wicket of a senior member of staff in his department. Ferro finished the Lympstone innings off in style with an outrageous run out (throwing the stumps down despite not facing them…), leaving the Erratics needing just over 6.5 runs per over to win the match.

In the space of the Erratics leaving the field, and our opening pair of Ferro and Kirby going out to the middle, a swarm of mosquitoes descended upon the Lympstone ground, making umpiring/scoring/watching the game rather difficult. Batting was theoretically difficult too, although watching Ferro bludgeon his way to 30 off a mere 12 balls one wouldn’t have thought so. So ferocious was Ferro’s hitting that it looked as if he may reach his retiring point without Kirby even facing a ball. Despite being magnanimous enough to let Jonathan face a ball or two, Chris left the field having reached 30 without his opening partner having the chance to trouble the scorers, bringing Phil Ellis to the crease. Phil and Jonathan set about adding to the Erratics total, with sharp singles taken and the odd boundary thrown in for good measure. Sadly Kirby’s wicket fell when he was on 13, leading to a number of Erratics wickets falling cheaply. Thankfully, Phil Ellis managed to keep his head, whilst others around him lost theirs, going on to make an impressive and unbeaten 31. With one ball of our 20 overs remaining, and a Lympstone bowler on his hat-trick, Ferro was recalled to the crease (having been the first man to retire) and promptly dispatched the poor fellow for a monstrously large six. Despite Ferro and Ellis’ unbeaten knocks, the Erratics fell 24 runs short of the opposition.

Following the match, we went to the pub where Lympstone provided a fine spread of hot and cold snacks and we nursed our bruised egos/mosquito bites with a pint or two of generously provided beer.

Here’s hoping the game on the 19th July has a better result and an equally fine spread of food.
