Crediton Inn v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 11 May 2017 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
It feels like Erratic victories at the Newton St Cyres Recreation Ground are a rare sighting, and those against the Crediton Inn more elusive still. I was surprised to find, then, that this win actually takes our record against the pubsters over the past 5 seasons to 3 wins and 4 losses. If we can manage a win against Heads & Tails next week we might even have to put to bed the old Devonian adage: 'At Newton St Cyres the Erratics plays dires'. [Don't groan - I didn't ask to write this match report, so you'll take what you're given].
We bowled first with a new white cherry (can cherries be white?) that offered plenty of bounce and swing – in fact, the prodigious amount of the latter on offer contributed to us bowling over 20 wides. When we did get it in the right place it generally kept their batsmen quiet though, and regular wickets – none of their batsmen made it to the retirement score of 30 – helped to restrict our hosts to 117, encouragingly modest given that they had made 170 against us in our last meeting.
More importantly it was low enough to allow the Erratics to stick to their brand of polite T20 cricket – a consistent drip feed of nudges and nurdles should do the trick here. Duncan played the anchor man, battling a sore hip to make 30. Fraser and Tom could both consider themselves a tad unfortunate to end up on the wrong side of marginal decisions, but Krups kept the chase in order with his usual blend of calm and panache. There was still a bit of work to do when he was caught behind off the glove on 28 though, with a rate of 7 an over needed from the last 4. Watching Erratics were generally confident that the seasoned campaigners Weiler and Rutherford would get us home, and the next 2 overs each went for the required 7. The pen-ultimate over, however, went for just 4 – Crediton's field placings had been spot on throughout and runs were never easy to come by – leaving us needing 10 from the final over. A first ball boundary from Nigel took a good chunk out of that, but Crediton bounced back to take it all down to the final ball. We needed 1 to tie, 2 to win.
All of the fielders were set back on the boundary, offering Nigel the single needed to share the spoils. What do you think he did next, dear Erratics? Always one to relish a challenge, Nigel decided to swing for glory – he hit the ball hard out towards long-off, but not hard enough to clear the rope. Thankfully, though, their fielder had drifted in 10 yards from the boundary: it dropped just over his head, and bounced over the rope for a dramatic match winning 4.
The roast potatoes in the Crediton Inn were, as ever, absolutely delicious, and as we washed them down with a pint of New World Pale Ale we thanked our hosts for an evening of high drama and hospitality and pondered whether £3 could ever be better spent.
