Match report Erratics returned to the familiar territory of Cheriton Fitzpaine (CF), after victory on Saturday, for the mini-league fixture against the ground’s residents. As appears to be the case for UK weather this summer, the sun shone. Methinks Bob Marley would approve and want to move his cricketing feet.

Skipper Mark Hailwood lost the toss. CF perhaps inevitably opted to bat, given the tendency for their outfield to slow up during such evenings. Opening, Hailwood and Nick Walding bowled tidy up- and downhill stints, followed by Fraser Chave and George Greaves at respective ends, the latter securing a couple of well-earned wickets through good pace and bounce. Matt Crawford, continued to add to his Erratic wicket tally by finding the stumps: first by conventionally bowling a batsmen; then, from a no ball, and in one motion, catching a shot and launching the ball to affect a run out. Meanwhile Ben Youngman capitalised on fissure to fool and bowl two batsmen through low bounce. Bringing proceedings in the field to a close, David Shackleton took his first Erratic wicket, and George and Hailwood returned, including a two-wicket over from the latter. A special mention goes to Duncan Chave, for a series of Mark Crossley-like stops to protect a huge chunk of the off side, Siva Subramanian, for once again coming to the rescue in the absence of a “recognised” wicket-keeper, and the CF batting support, for managing to drown out the neighbouring sheep, although not quite Nick.

137 was the target for victory and first to make a dent were Duncan and Mark Phillips. Duncan, kindly reminded by CF that he was unbeaten from Saturday, immediately found the boundary, only for a Nick Guscott off-break to soon after beat his bat and brush his off stump, after a series of leg-breaks. At the other end, and facing some brisk and fairly accurate bowling, Phillips was en route to 16 before his Twenty20 eyes spied a quick single, which sadly had to be abandoned, leaving him a couple of inches shy of making it back to the crease. Fraser, batting at three, amassed 15, and Nick, batting at five, and following his highest Erratic score on Saturday, added 21. David batted in between and in what is becoming characteristic fashion, that is, with a succession of text-book shots before retiring. A boundary from George, after continually sweetly striking the ball to surprisingly only reach 17, brought up the winning runs, therefore victory, and perhaps enough to secure a place at finals days for the third successive year.
