Krupakar reports...
Who would have thought that with just 8 available players, a game would go on; and that with only 8 fielders we will be able to restrict a strong Newton St Cyres team to less than 150 runs in 20 overs, on a batting friendly pitch; and finally who would have thought that the same team would chase that target with an over to spare. After all, cricket is a game of uncertainties and all this unfolded on the very game of the Cheriton Fitzpaine mini-league, when the Erratics played the Newton St Cyres.
At the start, uncertainty on how to get on with the game with only 8 players was proving to be a factor at which point our skipper of the day Jonathan Kirby thought may be if luck was with us, we would win the toss and bat first, to make sure we are not thrashed for a big score. ‘Guess what happened next’, NSC won the toss and elected to bat.
And therefore the Erratics, limited in numbers but with plenty of positive thinking and commitment went on to field. With this mind set, we bowled quite well especially Fraser being the most economical off his four over supported by committed fielding which was managed well by JK by making sure the fielders covered the strategic points. We managed to restrict the opposition to 150, allowing at least 3 batsmen from NSC to retire on thirty.
With a lot to chase, JK’s message to the batsmen was simple… ‘try to get as close to the target as you can’. Soon, Fraser and Krupakar opened the proceedings for Erratics. While Fraser was keeping it cool at one end, Krupakar got out in the first over. This followed some elegant batting in the form of Fraser Chave, George Greaves, Jamie Greenslade and Jonathan Kirby who all made respective thirties that consisted of great strokeplay and some quick fire running between the wickets, especially by JK and JG. This set up a great stage for Andrew Forrester and Chris Ferro to finish up the proceedings in style.
A wonderful match that we never thought would match up, also turned out to be more wonderful as this is JK’s 400th game for the Erratics.
This probably could also be a ‘first’ for Erratics, to have played a game with 8 players leave alone winning it; I’ll leave that for the guys who are good in collecting stats to find out (I’m sure Fraser is reading this!)
Now we are into the finals day of the Cheriton Fitzpaine mini-league for the third consecutive time in three years, and who knows the trophy could be ours this time!
