Heads & Tails v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 15 May 2019 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 31 runs

Match report
It's now officially Mid-May and things are beginning to heat up, both in a meteorological sense, and in a we've-now-played-a-few-games sense.

This is Part 1 of a quadrilogy of games spaced over five days, only giving us the Friday off, and it saw The Erratics play Heads and Tails at Newton St Cyres.

A late illness replacement before the Erratics could get on the team bus saw Heslop tag out for our beloved 'foghorn' Walding.
Not to be down-heartened, Kaptain Krups won the toss and in true WG Grace spirit, elected to bat first.

Messrs Wright and Kirby saw us off to a blistering start, racing to 52 off the first six overs, with Wright hitting a towering straight 6 à la Jason Roy earlier this week. Reaching 25, the crowd cheered his retirement before umpire Krups let us know he needed 30. Adamant to preserve his average, the last few runs were a little more slow and scratchy, but did reach retirement although not before Kirby chipped a catch, the end of a fine opening partnership.

The next phase of the game saw the run rate drop- only 9 scored off the next four overs, as the new bowler darted in some heavy balls the Erratics struggled to score and wickets started to fall. Krups and Ferro managed to get the 'worm' wriggling again, with 26 scored off the next 3 overs, including two big sixes. The second of which brought the second exactly-thirty of the evening, and despite Krups's "who me?" expression, was applauded back to the pavilion.

Ferro and Rutherford both got in on the act of scoring maximums, the team really was inspired by the England ODI team, and after 15 from the final over, a score of 144 was looking good.

Youngman opened up with a maiden to the appropriately named 'Quicke', and together with Crawford restrained the batsmen to singles in the first few overs, despite the struggles with bowling into the sun following the agreement to bowl at a single end. Wickets one and two, déjà vu, both batsmen chipping back to the bowler. Waldo and Curtis continued the strangle, with the latter's tempting loopy deliveries ended in frustration for the home team's number four, stumped after Kirby's quick glove-work, his second piece of good work following a chancer taking on Ferro's arm from the deep.

Short run-ups continued to be the order of the day, Rutherford and Pullan took us through the middle overs but the game looked to be heading away from Heads and Tails as the required rate grew past 10. As the sun fell, it became colder in the shade, and the birds began chattering in excitement for the game's climax. Walding dropped a skier on the boundary but did save the 4, generally the fielding was tidy from all; a sprightly Wright took a good catch from Youngman at the death, and although the second innings curtain fell on a decent 112, the Erratics won by a good margin.

An excellent all round performance inspired, I think, by a very positive and almost intimidating opening Errati-stand.

To add to their fortunes, the players ended up at the Beer Engine, cementing it's position as one of the best post-match eateries. Good beer and excellent food, the teams gorged themselves on pulled pork buns, sticky chicken wings and veggie pastries. Walding made his second drop of the day, spilling the lunch money, the banter around the table a reflection on the mood.

And then we all headed off home, albeit the wrong way.
