Match report Ipplepen always strikes me as a well-run cricket club. They field three league teams, coach plenty of juniors and take care of their ground. This season, they've planted some more trees and scattered rainbow-coloured benches around the boundary. They also never fail to find eleven players to take us on. Or should that be 'take us apart'? I remember some close games in the past but the pattern in recent years has been for Ipplepen to demoralise us by hitting a lot of sixes and then for us to scrabble for respectability. This latest encounter was no different.

I don't remember any of our bowlers doing anything particularly wrong, and the in-swingers of bustling debutant Connor Johnson-Goodier were difficult to get away, but none of this stopped one Ipplepen batsman from retiring at 30 off six deliveries. (John Curtis was unfortunate that his bowling spell coincided with this onslaught, but perhaps it was some sort of penance for arriving fashionably late and getting changed in the home dressing room.) Matt Crawford, Ben Youngman, Rithvik Gutha and Nick Walding also bowled, and we stemmed the flow of runs towards the end of the 20 overs, although I suspect that this was thanks to Ipplepen deciding that their total was already enough.

Ben Pullan and Chris Ferro began our chase in pursuit of about 170 runs to win. Pullan struck a handsome on-drive for four up the hill but was out soon after, quickly followed by Siva Subramanian and Jack Heslop. Johnson-Goodier demonstrated his all-rounder credentials with a shot-filled innings, and Ferro eventually retired at 30, but we never threatened victory. The main interest in the final overs was seeing how many ways Walding would find to get hit by the ball.
