Morebath v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 30 Jun 2019 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets

Match report The last day of NDT19 had an early start. So we had to pack up the bunkhouse prior to our final dose of NDT19 cricket. Fortunately, while the bunkhouse's only bath is outside, perhaps only suitable for birds, and makes noises that might attract them, its two showers are ample, so it doesn't need any more baths.

Morebath is an upland village in the county of Devon, England. Its lack of size makes its history difficult to trace. However, a trawl through its parish records allows me to inform you that: `It is mostly given over to sheep-farming, and situated on the southern edge of Exmoor.' It has a church, St George's Church, which can be found at 51°00'54.9"N 3°29'31.9"W or, if you have an OS map to hand, at 295423 125048. Locating it prior to 1966 was probably tricky due to a railway station to resident ratio of approximately 1 to 150. Its population now remains at approximately 300 residents, one of which, I recall from Hello! magazine of April 7th 2016, is Caroline Quentine. But how many railway stations did Morebath once have?

The early start was the result of a three-side Twenty20 day round-robin. The other invitees, Latimer CC, were, so I am led to believe, predominantly first- and second-year university students who had played Chulmleigh the day before, alebit in shortened format due to traffic hold-ups. Their 152 was enough to dispatch Morebath with relative ease in the first fixture of the day. But not even skipper-for-the-day Jim Thomson's starvation tactic, comprising subjecting them to back-to-back fielding stints, and our setting a target of 168 runs to win, could maintain our 100% NDT19 record, even with an unusually strong determination to win. I once recall an episode of Men Behaving Badly in which Tony decided to convert the shed into a sauna, or `shedna'. I shall ring the show’s producer, Simon Nye, to suggest a reviving the show with episode Lads Behaving Rather Unsportingly, in which Gary and Dorothy’s son embarks on a cricket tour of Devon.

The final fixture of the day was a much different affair. Morebath had installed a temporary television and bar for some cricket format involving strange-coloured clothing and in which Edgbaston's delightful outfield seldom came into play. The lack of whites and proper shots presumably drove them to drink. Still, though, they offered to cap the festival day off with a 15-over finale. Morebath batted first and amassed 88. When we hit the field, what their umpires lacked in ball-counting skills were more than compensated for in on-field highjinx. The target of 88 was reached fairly easily.

Cricket. Batting retirees during the day, surpassing 25, were Fraser `key poster, but not key WhatsApp poster' Chave, David `Shackers / Shack-attack / Shackles' Shackleton, Matt `Claws / sweep shot' Crawford and Rithvik `Britvic 55 / Jägermeistermeister' Gutha. Wicket takers were Jim, Fraser, Shack, Fraser, Rithvik, Fraser, Rithvik, Jim, Ben `whatever happens on tour, stays on tour, especially when clasping a beer bottle between teeth while trapped in cricket clothing' Pullan, Fraser, Ben `your humble narrator, on this occasion' Youngman, and that last chap again.

On a final note, Waldo is becoming a Cockney, so we’ll want him to commute for future games. While his last game comprised bowling figures of 1 0 20 0, we should bestow upon him loudest appeal of the day. Not by him. But for him. And by the Erratics for LBW from their perfect vantage point square on the boundary. Umpire Danny `tour manager extraordinaire' Williamson duly obliged. A golden duck. I'm sure we'll see him before the annual dinner, when we may want to issue mantelpiece clearing reminders. Seriously, though, Nick, we all wish you well. May your exhortations continue to echo in the Teign Valley.
