Match report
It was good to finally play a game: only our second in the month of August after a string of 7 games cancelled/abandoned due to rain or lack of players on one side or the other. That might explain why we looked a little rusty with the bat – but good bowling and a slowish pitch didn’t make things any easier. Mind you, none of that seemed to both Nigel much, who compiled a wonderful 52 (retired n.o.) batting at number 3, pacing his innings in the Chris Gayle way – a steady start, and then boundaries galore. It was his 6th half-century for the Erratics. Despite Nigel’s heroics we were always looking a bit light on runs, but a purposeful intervention from Martin Weiler late on dragged us close to the minimum-needed-to-be-competitive-in-any-T20-game 120 mark.
Except, it wasn’t really. As we have come to learn – rather brutally at times – Broadclyst are a big-hitting team these days, and although Matt Bauer was unavailable they had a batsman (Marcus) of similar calibre. He played some remarkable back foot shots, powering balls of all lengths over the boundary as though they were half-trackers, on his way to the retirement score of 50. We chipped away with wickets at the other end, and when Marcus retired we thought we might be in with half a chance, but Lee Bridger continued the onslaught and even though John Curtis caused a late scare with a 2-wicket over the hosts won comfortably. Matt Crawford was, as ever, exceptional in the field. Andrew Forrester tweaked his calf taking a neat catch behind the stumps and had to be carried from the field, leaving Martin Weiler to keep wicket – padless – for the final few balls.
Pasty and crisps were laid on for a couple of quid, and we raised a can of Oranjeboom to the completion of the T20 season, which ended with a well-balanced record of 11 wins, 10 losses, and 1 tie.
