Heads & Tails v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 05 Aug 2020 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 15 runs
Match report
A week on from playing against Crediton Inn at the same ground in Newton St Cyres in the blinding setting sun, this week’s mid-week match against Heads & Tails was played under heavy cloud, solving the problem of whether to bowl from the single end, but presenting the opposite problem of rapidly losing light as game drew towards a seemingly tight finish.
Heads and Tails CC, named from when the team was comprised largely of headmasters and teachers in the 1980s, won the toss and sent The Erratics, captained by Martin Wright, into bat. The Erratics’ innings got off to a strong start with Harry Everett scoring a rapid 30 before retiring at the end of the 3rd over, and Jonathan Beverley also retiring at 30 meant that the score reached a solid 82 by the mid-point. A number of meaningful contributions were made throughout the second half of the innings from Martin Weiler, Matt Crawford and Krups Nallala, notably with the latter being nonchalantly caught one-handed at cow corner while hurrying the run rate along towards the end of the innings. The innings finished on a competitive 150-6. However, after being comfortably beaten the week before after posting 125, The Erratics knew that the artificial pitch and fast outfield at Newton St Cyres is conducive to big hitting and quick scoring if the batsmen can adjust to the surface.
In contrast to Heads and Tails, The Erratics’ opening bowling partnership of Ben Youngman and Lee Grant ripped through the top order, reducing the score to 15-5 from the opening 5 overs. Ben bowled a tidy spell and took wickets with catches from Martin Wright at mid-off and a sharp low catch at first slip from Nigel Rutherford, finishing with a wicket maiden and impressive figures of 2-5 from his three-over spell. From the other end, Lee’s left-arm over the wicket action troubled the batsmen with tricky movement back into the right handers, removing Heads and Tails’ opener, caught behind off a glove, and clean bowling another two.
Far from being defeated, Heads and Tails’ middle order counterattacked with three batsmen scoring strongly and giving little away, each reaching the retirement score of 30 and bringing Heads and Tails back into contention. One memorable and odd wicket taking opportunity occurred when a catching chance went down at mid-off. Yet, because of the fading light and because the Martin Wright grabbed the ball on the half-volley, the batsman was deceived into thinking the catch had been taken and began returning to the pavilion. However, similar confusion in the field meant that the subsequent run-out opportunity was also missed, leaving the batsman a chance to return to the crease and everyone a little bemused at what had just happened.
Following the retirements, Heads and Tails reached 107-5 and needing a further 43 from the final 5 overs. Some neat death bowling kept Heads and Tails at bay, in particular from Nigel Rutherford, from whom Matt Crawford took a catch high from the grey sky in the covers. The regular taking of wickets by The Erratics almost came back to unfortunately punish them since it allowed the quick scoring retired batsmen to retake the field. However, Nigel removed the danger man, taking a light edge to be caught behind when the batsman was going for a big hit. Lee returned to bowl the final over with Heads and Tails requiring 23 from the final over to win. This turned out to be too much of an ask, with Lee smashing the pink ball into the sprung stumps with the final ball to finish with 4 wickets and a decent win for The Erratics.
