Clyst Hydon v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 02 Jul 2021 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost 42 Runs

Match report Report by Mike O'Sullivan

As the team ventured out to the middle, excitement levels grew as we admired our surroundings, from Clyst Hydon's new pavilion to the flashy electronic scoreboard. But the real attention grabber was in the middle of the ground, to the stumps in particular. These were no ordinary stumps, but the magic kind we only see on TV. And like moths to a flame, we were all soon in a huddle watching Fraser test the equipment was working with firm taps to the bails and stumps. Seeing the lights flash for the first time only added to the prematch commotion.

The Clyst Hydon money tap must have run dry, as this flashy tech was juxtaposed against the bedsheet used as a sightscreen, which didn't quite reach across to the match wicket.

Clyst Hydon batted first and were soon motoring along... They had a handful of big hitters, and we did well to finish the innings with only one lost ball.

Spearheaded by Ben Youngman who bowled well at the top, however Clyst Hydon batters soon got their eye in with some big shots around the ground. We persevered and got some rewards with superb fielding in the deep from Matt Crawford leading to a great run out.

With a target of 146, we got off to a quick start, spearheaded by Duncan Chave, who decided to primarily deal in boundaries as he was reduced to one functioning hamstring. After he boshed his way to 33 retired, Fraser Chave came in and picked up where Duncan left off. Some good running, a six and a couple of fours later, Fraser was caught for 26. This left the job in the hands of the middle order, who looked comfortable out there, although struggled to keep up with the required rate.

As victory drifted further away, Clyst Hydon picked up another couple of wickets, with the only positive (maybe?) we got to see their flashy stumps in action. A late cameo from Matt Crawford gave us a glimmer of hope before he was bowled having made a quickfire 16, and the tormenting red lights once again began to flash. The rain began to fall with a couple overs left and we trickled our way to 103 off our 20 overs, incidentally matching the previous total the team made at Clyst Hydon back in July 2019 (do with this stat as you will...). Overall, an enjoyable game, with the scoreline looking worse than the performance.
